Analyze Learners-
Everystudentisfromthe cityWheeling,WestVirginia. Theyare all fourthgraders, betweenthe
agesof nine andtenwithtwentystudentsbeingall together. There are elevengirls,andnine boys;and
differentculturesbeingtwoof themMuslims,three Jewish,twoAfricanAmericans,andthe restWhite
Americans. Iwill be teachingthem aboutHolidayTraditions.
State Objectives-
My 4th
grade classwill learnaboutHolidayTraditions fromaspectsof differentcultures around
the world. Studentswill describe andrecognizedifferentHolidayTraditionsbypicture flashcards,
singingholidaysongs,andwillcreate aposter comparingandcontrastingtwodifferentculturesholiday
traditionsbythe endof the weekwith90% accuracy.
SelectMethods,Media,Materials-
-Create flashcardswithdifferentculturescelebratingtheirholidays.
-Singdifferentculturessongs“HolyNight”,“KwanzaTime”,“Hanukkah,OhHanukkah”.
-Use the computertodo researchon differentculturesholidaytraditions.
-Create posterstoshowthe researchdone oncomparingand contrastingtwodifferentcultures
holidaytraditions.
-The smartboardwill be utilizedto demonstrate typical holidaytraditionssothe studentscan
discussandrelate to whatisshownon the smartboard.
Utilize MediaandMaterials-
I will demonstratethe differentculturesanddifferentholidaytraditionsbysingingdifferent
culturessongs. Usingthe computerwill helpstudents researchtounderstandmore about different
culturesholidaysandhowtheyare similarandhow theyare different. The smartboardwill be utilized
to demonstrate typical holidaytraditionssothe studentscandiscussandrelate towhatis shownonthe
smartboard. A computerlabwill be available foruse andreadytogo whenassigned. Iwill bringposter
board alongwithmaterialstocut,draw,and glue to the computerlab. The studentswill make aposter
afterresearchingtwoculturesandtheirtraditionsonthe computer.
Require LearnerParticipation-
As a group, on the firstday we will talkabouteachholidaytogether. The secondday I will hand
out the lyricsto eachsong sowe can all singthe songstogetheras a group. The thirdday,the students
will all goto the computerlab for an hour anda half andresearch and printout pictures twodifferent
culturesandtheirtraditions,comparingandcontrastingthem. Onthe fourthday,the studentswill cut
and paste theirpicturestotheirposterandwrite abouthow the twodifferandhow theycan compare.
On the lastday, the classwill presenttheirpostersinfrontof theirpeersexplainingtheir understanding
on the twodifferentculturesandtheirtraditions.
Evaluate andRevise-
Assesschildren usingflashcardstoevaluate students’knowledge ondifferenttraditionsand
cultures. Lookingatsong lyricswill assiststudentswhoneedsomethinginfrontof themtoread and
understand. Creatingposterswill assistthose whoare kinestheticandlearnbetterwithhands-on
projects. Mediaprovidedinthe lessonare forthose studentswhomare visual learners.
