Mobile and BPM, an Introduction

Agenda for this Conversation

         • A brief background of mobile and BPM
         • Biggest Risks to your mobile app
         • Demonstrate EMS vision
         • Along the way I hope we address two additional points:
•How should we treat mobile differently than a typical BPM project?
•How should we treat BPM mobile apps differently from a typical mobile app?

Brief Background on Mobile

BPM is a Little Late to the Party

On the whole, mobile BPM is late… but why?
         • In 2007, the best we could hope for with mobile devices in the
           enterprise was an “email approval.
         • BPM requirements were typically for information-rich interfaces –
pulling data from multiple sources into one screen for an important
           decision or action.
         • The wave of consolidation in the BPM market in 2009-2011
probably delayed the focus on mobile by 12 months or more.
         • A fair amount of innovation in BPM was happening in other areas

Current State

Lots of pieces are coming together
         • 5 years later, nearly everyone in the enterprise has (or could have)
access to a smartphone that has roughly the capabilities of a laptop
           from 2007.
         • IBM has laid the groundwork for a better mobile BPM future by
adding a layer of REST APIs that are actually in use by IBM
products, and by purchasing mobile infrastructure technology like
           Worklight
         • Companies are beginning to realize the opportunities to improve
           their businesses with mobile apps
         • BPM has gone mainstream
         • Cloud deployments are available for IBM BPM
