Brandon Basso gave a presentation on using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for accurate and low-cost map making and aerial imagery. He discussed 3DR's work in developing open-source autopilot systems and how UAVs can be used for agricultural monitoring by capturing images frequently at low altitudes with high resolution. Basso also outlined the benefits of using simple, disposable UAV systems for precision agriculture that could fly hourly missions to monitor crop health and help reduce US crop losses valued at $28 billion annually.
