Delivering world-class digital
transformation at high velocity
#experienceacquia
Together, our team has built products used by over 12 million customers
every month, for some of the largest organisations in Australia.
Over the past 24 months, we’ve been
part of digital transformation
projects for some of Australia’s best
loved brands.
Who we work with:
We bring
to digital transformation.
ENERGY VELOCITY EXPERTISE
Velocity
Velocity
Velocity is a simple but powerful method for
measuring the rate at which a team consistently
delivers business value.
The story of a RFP
•Consisted of a spreadsheet with 650
requirements which had been
developed over 5 months.

•Vendors had three weeks to solution
design, size the project, develop a
project plan.
4 million users
Half the site is

not responsive
48 millions visits

per year
!
"
#
Almost two years after
the process started
• The site is unchanged.

• Half the site still doesn’t work on mobile.

• Since the process started, there have been 80+
million visits.

• No code has been shipped to customers.

• No alpha/beta customer testing has been done.
Meanwhile…
•One developer built a free app that handled
about 1/4 of the RFT’s user stories.

•It took him one month.

•He open-sourced it.

•It’s averaging a 4.8 star ranking.

•He’s released 10 updates.
This is the difference between
weight and weightlessness.
This is the ability to transform.
This is velocity.
Let’s talk about weight.
Weight is the tension between two forces.
For enterprises, tension exists between the
need to innovate and the inability to move.
This tension is created by fear, aversion to risk
and unwillingness to embrace the unknown.
This tension is weight.
It’s weight that leads to such a
profound adoption lag in enterprise.
TECHNOLOGY
CONSUMERS
ORGANISATIONS
How do we build world-class experiences,
without feeling the weight of transformation?
Well, let’s talk about what it means
to be weightless.
Weightlessness is the absence
of tension.
For enterprises, weightlessness is not
simply the absence of paralysis.
Innovation must balance against strategy
or it will create a new set of problems.
This balance is the weightlessness.
Weightlessness is
important because it
helps enterprises
take advantage of
liquid expectations.

CO M P E T E D I R E CT LY W I T H YO U
So how do we create
organisational weightlessness?
These are the forces of
resistance.
These are also the ingredients
of transformation.

The International Space Station (ISS)
is the largest object humans have
ever put into orbit.
Bringing Velocity and Momentum to Digital Transformation Projects
Build products,

not projects.
The first module
“Zayra” was 18 tonne,
and 13 metres.
“Zayra" was carried into
orbit by a Russian
‘Proton’-type rocket.

The really tough part of building this enormous
structure in space was that it had to be a viable
spacecraft the whole time. It wasn’t just like a
ship you can build in dry dock and launch when
it’s all finished up; we had to really think through
how all the systems would work as we were
building it out in the most hazardous
environment that people can operate in.”
“
John Shannon, ISS Program Manager
•Discover a cure for osteoporosis
•Develop a solution for growing crops in space
•Build a robotic arm capable of moving 260 tonne objects in
space, without actually getting to test it first.
•Develop remote medical systems
•Develop advanced water filtration and purification systems
•End the Cold War.
•…so that Russia could send the first module into space using
their reliable legacy technology, and
•…so that space shuttles could be used for science instead
of war.
These are all the
things that had to
be done to get
the first module
into orbit.

There’s more than one
way to slice this pie. MVP
Deliver value early, and often.

Velocity is a consequence, not a choice.
Think big, start small.
Using this “booster rocket” approach,
Football Federation Australia have been able
to deliver the following in 12 months:
•22 x websites
•10 x ReactNative apps
•1 x public API
•1 x digital style guide
•1 x identity management platform
Firstly, assemble the booster
rockets you need to get into
orbit.
Don’t worry about trying to hire
or nurture expertise you’re only
going to need once.
ACQUIA
LOUD&CLEAR CODEWARE
Acquia is great for getting into orbit quickly because
it solves for a lot of “foundational” elements in one
decision.
• Content Management
• Hosting
• Performance testing
• Application scaling
• CI/CD tooling
• Code Management
• API and out-of-the-box integrations
• Enterprise-grade security
• Personalisation
• Unit testing framework
And it’s flexible enough to allow you to change your mind down the track.
DRUPAL
ON ACQUIA
API
We used the booster rockets to get
our three core modules into orbit
that enabled everything else to be
built.
Our core module had:
• Drupal running in our Acquia environment with CI/CD
• A robust API built on API Gateway
• A living styleguide in code
• Automated unit testing
DRUPAL
API
STYLEGUIDE
Next, we built all the components
that were required so that
humans could inhabit the digital
channels and started shipping
them into orbit.
• We built 65 components that allowed us to
launch.
• We’re now up to 102 components.
Bringing Velocity and Momentum to Digital Transformation Projects
Once we were live and in orbit,
we’ve transitioned the
maintenance to the flight crew -
FFA’s internal team who run the
stack.
In following phases, we’ve been building:
• Club finders and enhanced features
• 10 club apps, built on ReactNative
• Integrated Identity Management, built on AWS
Cognito
And now, other developers and
third parties are building
modules that integrate in with
the core.
Choose a technology that gets you into orbit quickly, and allows you
to build in quick, modular steps.
As a transformation lead, your mission is to get your digital eco-
system into orbit, where the weight of transformation disappears.
You don’t need to do it all at once - but you do need to get started.
Don’t be afraid to use agencies and Acquia as your booster
rockets. Your mission starts once you’re in orbit.
The lessons we’ve learned:
Digital transformation is a byproduct of
sensible, strategic execution.

It’s not a project.
By hiring digital minds and harnessing the
tools that deliver velocity, creating a
digital business can be organic, cost-
effective, and simple.
