BPMN is a business process modeling notation that provides a standard way to visualize business processes. It aims to be understandable by both business users and IT users. BPMN can be used to model processes at the implementation level but gaps exist in modeling processes at a strategic understanding level. New developments in BPMN 2.0 and business process refactoring aim to bridge this gap and allow processes to be modeled at both the strategic and implementation levels.

Summary BPMN is the pre-eminent process notation for implementation-level understanding of business processes, for both business and IT BPMN is in use by 50+ vendors, and is portable using XPDL and BPDM The power of BPDM (and BPMN 2.0) will be its ability to support business process refactoring (ie. different views of the same process) These new views will foster process understanding at a more strategic level, yet will be directly “translatable” into today’s BPMN… providing a direct linkage between the business strategy and the detailed process activities in your company.
