INTRODUCTION
Ectobox, Inc.
We help manufacturing companies increase their competitive advantage.
We do that with IoT solutions that, among other things:
• reduce costs of services
• reduce unplanned downtime
• create new revenue opportunities

AGENDA
1. Review what is IoT
2. How to move towards IoT
3. Key components of IoT solution
4. How IoT projects work
5. Do's and Don'ts in IoT
WHAT IS IOT
Have you seen the IBM Watson elevator
commercial? It’s a pretty good definition of
IoT.
To paraphrase the commercial, imagine an
elevator repairman walks up to the security
desk, and says “I am here to repair your
elevator.” The security guard looks, and says,
“Our elevator is working fine.” The security
guard says that he has sensor readings that
say otherwise and it needs repair soon
before catastrophe.
IoT can take data from systems and provide
valuable information like predicting when an
issue is going to occur well before it occurs,
alert the right people about the issue, and
then ensure the issue is fixed.
That is IoT.
WHY DO IOT?
Business Goals
• Lower costs
• Increase productivity
• New revenue
• Increase competitive
advantage
GE TRANSPORTATION,
GROVE CITY
10 to 20% Reduction in Unplanned Downtime
HOW TO MOVE TO IOT
How to move towards IoT?
• Become data driven organization
• Get data and use it
• Define
• Connect and Collect
• Visualize
• Analyze
• Optimize
• KPIs such as OEE
• Maximize efficiencies,
Reduce waste
• Get expertise and team
in place
• Small project

HOW IOT PROJECTS WORK
Start from the top and work down
• Value of IoT product: why will this be valuable, how.
• Information needed to gather to realize value: what do you need
to see in the end to help achieve the business goals, improve the
business, to improve how the machine is used, reduce costs, or
find new revenue.
• Data to capture :which will then be transformed into the valuable
information to create value.
• Tech to gather data: to transform into info, to create value for IoT
product; what sensors, how will you connect to the data, cloud
platforms to use, IoT software platforms, etc.
HOW IOT PROJECTS WORK
Process
• Review business goals and future plans
• Pick a problem to solve
• Define business case
• Plan the Proof of Concept
• Proof of Concept
• Continue the IoT Journey
KEY COMPONENTS
Key components of IoT solution
• Software
• Hardware
• Network
• Interface to External Systems
• Security
KEY COMPONENTS

Data
Processing
Machine
Learning
Digital Twin

External
Data
KEY COMPONENTS
Software
• Data: from the equipment, processed and analyzed.
• Model: virtual definition of the equipment
• IoT software platform
• Key to the whole IoT solution
• IoT software platform should, among other key attributes be:
• Open to connect to any sensor, embedded system, and data
source
• Have APIs for other applications to interface with it
• Have a development environment for customizing the solution
KEY COMPONENTS
Hardware
• Connected sensors and actuators
• Captures data
• Transducer is at heart of sensor, converts a form of energy into
DC energy, then analog to digital signal
• Thousands and thousands of them, costs have come down,
cheap, trouble is figuring out right sensor for situation
• Consider accuracy, repeatability range, noise, resolution
• Embedded system
• All sensors require some kind of embedded system or chipset
with power and radio to transmit the data
• some embedded systems have more powerful logic including full
operating systems you might've heard of like Windows or Linux,
can process, filter, and analyze data
KEY COMPONENTS
Network
• OT Network: connects sensors to the network
• IT Network: connects OT network to backhaul
• Backhaul: takes data to the internet or public cloud
• IoT Cloud: computing and storage in data centers, AWS, Azure, et
al; should support applications, analytics packages, development
tools and APIs for data services
• IoT platform: software package, manage devices and runs
application code, provides development environment which
manages the digital twin and application code
KEY COMPONENTS
Interface to External Systems
• Analytics: BI and machine learning
• Data services: weather, maps, pricing, traffic, inventory
• Business systems: ERP, CRM, financial, PLM
• Other IoT products
KEY COMPONENTS
Security
• Protect data and all related systems
• Attack vectors
• Physical security
• Network security
• Cloud and web security
• Application security
• Mobile security
• System security
DO’S AND DON’TS
Business
• DO focus on where IoT can help the business
• DO operate like a Lean startup
• DO become a data driven organization
DO’S AND DON’TS
Technology
• DO use an IoT software platform
• DON’T build a custom IoT platform
• DO be aware of the technology behind IoT
DO’S AND DON’TS
Project
• DO have people on team with IoT experience
• DON’T start by defining data and sensors.
• DO start with defining business outcomes and requirements.
• DO Think Big but Start Small. That’s the only way you’ll get
something out the door.
• DON’T forget the major Steps in an IoT Project:
