DENVER — Hillary Rod-
ham Clinton summoned mil-
lions of voters who supported
her in the primaries to send Ba-
rack Obama to the White
House,declaringTuesdaynight
in a Democratic National Con-
vention speech that the man
who defeated her “is my candi-
date and he must be our presi-
dent.”
In a prime-time address, the
former first lady added, “We
don’t have a moment to lose or
a vote to spare.”
Thepackedconventionfloor
became a sea of white “Hillary”
signs as the New York senator
strode to the podium.
Calling herself a “proud sup-
porter” of Mr. Obama, she dis-
missed Republican John
McCain with a few choice
words.
“No way. No how. No
McCain,” she said as the hall
erupted in cheers.
“We don’t need four more
yearsofthelasteightyears,”she
added.
Her speech capped a day in
which Democrats ripped into
Mr. McCain as indifferent to
the working class and cozy with
big oil.
“If he’s the answer, then the
question must be ridiculous,”
New York Gov. David Paterson
said of the Republican candi-
date.
By contrast, Mr. Obama will
“appeal to us not as Republi-
cans or Democrats, but first
and foremost as Americans,”

Texas once again led the na-
tion with the highest percent-
age of residents without health
insurance, a U.S. Census Bu-
reau report showed Tuesday,
although the same study also
reports a slight dip last year in
the percentage without cover-
age across the nation.
Almost one of every four
Texas residents — 24.8 percent
— were uninsured in 2006 and
2007, based on an average of
the rates for those two years.
That’s up from 23.9 percent for
2004 and 2005.
The national number also
increased a bit for the two-year
period to 15.5 percent. Howev-
er, looking at 2007 by itself, the
percentage of uninsured in the
country fell from 15.8 percent
in 2006 to 15.3 percent in
2007. (State percentages were

Whenever Ladaryl Kelly got
into trouble with the law, Dal-

Lonnie Cole was there to help.
Detective Cole’s controver-

Kelly, his informant, first came
to light several months ago af-
ter Mr. Kelly was arrested on
suspicion of taking part in an
armed Waxahachie truck heist.
But the detective’s efforts to
extricate his snitch from legal
entanglements extended be-

least two other police agencies,
