Editor's Notes

  • #3: Here’s the agenda for our meeting today..
  • #4: If we look at our industry these are pretty wild times for everyone. Now many organizations are thinking and becoming more like “tech” companies and digital business capabilities are beginning to dominate every industry – from banking to energy and health care. <<Build>> This was first suggested by the US entrepreneur, investor, software engineer and World Wide Web Hall of Famer, Marc Andreesen in his seminal paper first published in the Wall Street Journal – “Software is eating the World” – it’s still worth and read and four years later it’s truer than ever <<Build>> This is partially the result of some important and converging trends Like that little thing call cloud where $177 billion annually is being spent on public cloud services worldwide …by 2017, the world will have downloaded 268 billion mobile apps. ….and by 2018, analysts predict that half of the collaboration between will be conducted through APIs – like for example business like Expedia where $2billion dollars of their annual revenue (more than 90%) is generated by API’s <<Segue to next slide>> To thrive in this new reality, developing and delivering applications that drive superior user experiences and engage your customers and staff is the new business imperative.
  • #5: As I’m sure you know, the growth of mobile apps has been explosive over the last 7 years. Apple first launched iOS and its AppStore back in mid-2008, by the end of 2008 there were 7,500 apps Early 2009 Google launched Android and the Google Play store. That saw significant adoption and new apps.. So within 2 years there were 400,000 apps between iOS and Android The growth continued and accelerated, in 2011 the total mobile apps were nearly 1M [BUILD: 2.6..] And today the total apps stand at 2.6M.. And the cumulative app downloads at 155B. These apps are from various categories: games, music, social, news, productivity, collaboration, messaging, tools, and more – catering to both “consumers” and “business end-users” As the number of apps exploded, the sales & revenue from these apps exploded.. Giving way to what we call mobile app economy [BUILD: $30B..] Last year (2014) alone app sales were expected to reach a whopping $30B And it’s accelerating, app sales are expected to be $100B in 5 years (2020) With such fierce competition, your app needs to stand above the rest and to do that, you need to focus on the mobile user.
  • #6: And those mobile users - they hold the power - a slew of bad reviews could mean the end of your app. And today’s users demand perfection. <BUILD> In fact, 67% of mobile users are unwilling to wait for slow app load times, which means they have no problem abandoning your app and searching for a better service. <BUILD> “Crashes” is one of the most common words in 1-star reviews according to data collected from the app store. If your app crashes, you can expect a bad review. <BUILD> And 27% of users will consider abandoning a brand over a poor application experience. Not just an app, but the entire brand. And your app may not even be to blame: Mobile innovation means disruption to the market and your mobile apps. Have you noticed that the App Store has 2 rating types – Current Version and All Versions. That’s because when Apple announces a new version of iOS, many apps are no longer compatible and crash. You want to know about those crashes and get those compatibility issues fixed before your users ever notice. So how can you meet your users expectations?
  • #7: There are three things mobile users want: Performance: They want high speed transaction and quick load times. Quality: The app needs to be stable and reliable and Value: The app needs to provide the value end users are looking for and needs to be optimized for the user – if it takes 70% of your user 4 taps to get to the most popular functionality, someone else is going to have that same feature available in 2 taps or less. With MAA, you will be prepared to meet your users expectations. CA’s mobile app analytics helps you succeed in the mobile app economy by providing: Deep data visibility: When combined with APM, it provides a complete end-to-end view into mobile apps and infrastructure to deliver superior availability for your end-users Rapid Analysis: Crash analytics and video session playback allows for rapid analysis and repair to deliver seamless user interactions Actionable Analytics: Usage and user analytics allow you to understand who your users are, where they’re coming from, how they’re interacting with your mobile app, so you know where to focus your energy to make the most informed decisions on app improvements. Many companies will spend loads of money hiring design firms to create a great looking UI - that's wonderful, but if you don't have insight into what your users are actually doing and how they're using your app, you could have wasted a lot of money.  And finally, a key factor for success in mobile app economy is DevOps for Mobile: The combination of these analytics into a single tool also provides a great opportunity to further or even kick off a DevOps initiative. With MAA -- Dev and Ops have a single point of truth - they're booth looking at the same dashboards and data, so it reduces finger-pointing and leads to faster triage of issue. And the analytics we provide enables continuous improvement of your app. At every stage of the application lifecycle, IT operations, developers, and business analysts can gain the insights they need to deliver an exceptional user experience. So what kind of insights are you generating on your mobile app today?
  • #8: Can you answer these key questions about your mobile app?
  • #9: CA MAA provides answers to those questions and more. It provides the insights you need to deliver a 5 star user experience. From a value standpoint we address 3 main areas First is the IT Operations team – who is involved in monitoring the infrastructure behind their apps using our APM product. We extent that Visibility to the mobile apps that your customers are using. Help you get the end-to-end view from mobile device to a mainframe or other backend systems to show how your backend infrastructure is supporting the end users of your mobile application That’s Operational Analytics Second is the Developer value - when things go wrong, we help you support your development and operations team to start with a 30k ft level and rapidly zoom into a stack trace of an incident on the device & tie that back to the line of code that’s causing the issue. That’s Developer Analytics Third, is the Business Owner value - helping your app builders to gain insights to know if the app is used as designed. Are the end users gaining the value as envisioned. Adjust the placement and design so that the application is hitting the mark on the usage of those features. That’s Business Analytics And finally, when we pull all these analytics together, we have DevOps for Mobile which helps you continuously improve your user experience.
  • #10: Success in the mobile world takes collaboration from 3 key stakeholders. Ops, Dev, and the Business. The app needs to be performing. Operations needs to be able to: 1 – Prioritize alerts based on impact to business and revenue. 2 - Segment analytics based and 3 - They need end-to-end visibility into the mobile app infrastructure. Your app needs to be free of crashes. Developers need to be able to: 1 - Prioritize issues based on UX and revenue. 2 – Delve into device usage metrics like CPU, memory and frame rate 3 – Gain code-level visibility into issues And lastly, your app needs to be meeting business objectives. Business analysts need to be able to: 1 – Track custom metrics and measure ROI 2- Improve app flows for a better user experience. 3 – Make data-driven decisions when it comes to app improvements.
  • #11: Add screens depending on the audience. (Dev, Ops, Business) In addition, Operations Analytics allow you to: Isolate and rule out domain, network, data center issues Identify mobile app hotspots: usage, performance, coverage, issues Analyze performance of networks and locations to correlate with app performance
  • #12: Add screens depending on the audience. (Dev, Ops, Business) In addition, Developer Analytics allow you to: Screen capture issues to fix them faster, drive better UX Analyze errors and network behavior to identify issues in code or back-end servers Capture device usage metrics: CPU, memory, frame rate Tag a user, then understand how the app performed for that specific user (crash, latency)
  • #13: Add screens depending on the audience. (Dev, Ops, Business) In addition, Business Analytics allow you to: Gain visibility into performance of key business services Segment & analyze usage data by app version, carrier/WiFi, location, platform, OS Get data to help make better OpEx and CapEx decisions Tag a business event (e.g. Gold Customer, shopping cart > 100 items) and look at impact on the top line
  • #14: CA extends its commitment towards the notion of "DevOps” to MAA product by offering analytics at every step of the Mobile App Lifecycle Develop & Test, Production & Support, Business Analysis typically driven by the Dev, Ops, and Business teams (or persona as we call internally at CA) Developers ask: How can I know what my end-users are seeing? Can I get details on app crashes that I can use to fix issues? Can I get code-level visibility of user interactions on my app? Ops team is asking: How can I isolate my network or data center issues? Can I get alerts when my app crashes? Which backend services are affecting my app performance? Business Analysts are curious: How are my key business services performing? Which geographies are my users coming from? How can I help my users get more value? Essentially you need to answer 1) crash 2) performance and 3) usage metrics These questions are not only important to answer within each stage of the lifecycle but when “meld” together they enable ‘CONTINUOUS DELIVERY’ for your Mobile Apps . CA MAA helps with this continuous delivery for your DevOps, putting 'L' in your M.E.L.D. strategy.. Now let's talk about the last but not the least.. 'D' Deep Visibility of your mobile app..
  • #15: Two types of end-users for your mobile app analytics: Consumers Business users (walk thru the sample transactions listed above) Now let’s look at a couple of Case Studies that manifest these two end users..
  • #16: First let’s take a look at a “business end-user” case study.. This is a large wireless provider processing in-store transactions on a POS app on a tablet (walk thru situation, challenges, solution)
  • #17: Next we have a “consumer end-user” case study.. This MAA customer is multi-national bank with Android and iPhone apps that enables touch-enabled banking transactions for the consumers on their iOS and Android mobile devices (walk thru situation, challenges, solution) In your case clearly we’re talking about (pick one: consumer / business / both) end-user. This is great to look at the CA MAA product – let’s do a quick demo..
  • #27: For the past 34 years, our mission has been to help customers succeed in a constantly evolving business landscape. That focus has never been more critical than it is today.
  • #28: Here we have a quick illustration of how you can extend your current investments in APM to Mobile with MAA.. With APM you’re already monitoring your web apps all the way to mainframe As you layer on CA MAA, you will get the same level visibility for your mobile apps Moreover, as I mentioned earlier CA APM and MAA are very tightly integrated product passing an amount of data back and forth to deliver true mobile to mainframe visibility Let’s now talk about deployment and installation options.
  • #29: To address this problem, analytics are increasingly being used in a mobile context – This is great because now we have solutions that can monitor application behaviors – when, where and how they are being used. <<Build>> So if for example the business wants to run a national promotion via a new mobile app, these types of solutions should be capable of using geo-spatial data to pinpoint where the usage is (the business hot spots if you like) and any associated performance problems that could impact what really matters to the business -- mobile-app sales conversions. This is great in itself if an app is standalone – but what happens when there are business process linkages between that mobile experience and the back-end systems of record. <<Build>> Now it’s imperative that we have full traceability from the mobile app in order to pinpoint problems, especially what components supporting the app changed <<Build>> With this end-to-end visibility we’re no just fixings, but also building intelligence and knowledge that developers can use to optimize the application experience
  • #34: Can you answer these key questions about your mobile app?
