1. Title: Case Study: Me and You in the EU (part 2)

This case study will you to design competency based assignments, for case studies,
knowledge assignments and skills training assignments.

2. What will be expected from you? (introduction, objectives)

There are 4 subjects (tasks) to practice with. We will work in 4 groups. So choose your
partners and choose with your group one subject to work out in a knowledge assignment a
skills training and a case study. The subjects of the assignments, related to the election
campaign of mr. Bean for president of the EU, are:

      An election speech,
      A flyer for the election campaign,
      An interview with mr. Bean,
      A website for the election campaign.

3. Suppose you are… (the story, simulation, Leitmotiv)

After the controversial appointment of the current President of the European Council, Mr
van Rompuy from Belgium (June 2010) a lot of people came up with the idea for a new
political party “You in the EU”. One of the initiators was Mr. Bean. Mr. Bean also is the
leader of the party and wants to be elected as “President of the EU” in 2014. The slogan for
the election campaign is: “Me and You in the EU”. And after a heavy application procedure,
mr. Bean hired you to set up his election campaign.

4. What should you do? (the content (theory) of the assignment (s))

4.1 Task 1: Design/hold the election speech
Mr. Bean is invited by the trade unions to hold an election speech about the employment in
the EU. You could describe the information for the election speech with the following topics
or tips (you do not need every topic!)

      Why is the European Union important for the employment?
      How to pay this social funding (direct taxes or not by the EU?)
      What should the EU do to avoid illegal immigration?
      The impact of this European decision-making in the native situation?
      Equal treatment and pay for the workers in all countries
      Health and Safety at Work
      Employment and participation
      The right to a vocational education and training
      Social protection and immigration
      The Community Charter of Fundamental Social Rights.

4.2 Task 2: Develop the election flyer
Why vote for mr. Bean? That is what you should emphasize in this flyer. You could describe
the information for the flyer with the following topics or tips: (you do not need every topic!)

    The right to vote in the EU.
    The position and the interests of the citizens in the internal market of the European
     Union.
    There more than 500 million people living in the EU and they are rich third richest
     (BNP) people in th world
    It important that the European Union stands up for its citizens because 17% still live
     in poverty
    Is my voice heard in Brussels?
    Turkey must be a part of the EU.
    Value for your euro (money) = {stability}
    Information and communication about what lawmakers do in Brussels.
    EU competition policy (free market)

4.3: Task 3: The election interview
Mr. Bean will be interviewed for a national broadcasting station (tv) in one of the member
states. You are the famous interviewer and you must interview mr. Bean. Your colleague wil
play the role of mr. Bean. You could describe the interview in this task with the following
topics or tips: (you do not need every topic!)

      Peace and safety in the EU
      Economic and social solidarity in the EU
      Comes Turkey in the EU?
      How works the European Union?
      The political circumstances in the European Union
      The foreign policy of the European Union
      The right to vote in the EU
      The referendum, activism, protest or lobbying?
      There more than 500 million people living in the EU and they are rich third richest
       (BNP) people in th world
      How important is it that the European Union stands up for its citizens?
      How does it come that 17% of the people in the EU still live in poverty?
      Is my voice heard in Brussels?
      Why is the European Union important for the employment?

4.4: Task 4: Develop the election website
Why must mr. Bean becom president of the EU? That is what you should emphasize in this
flyer. You could describe the information for the flyer with the following topics or tips: (you

    Who is mr. Bean?
    What does he want to change in Europe?
    Peace and safety in the EU?
    Economic and social solidarity in the EU
    Comes Turkey in the EU?
    How works the European Union?
    Do we still have work after he is elected?
    The foreign policy of the European Union
    The right to vote in the EU.
    A referendum yes or no?
    The concern of the citizens the European Union will take over the power of the
     national parliaments?
    Is your voice heard in Brussles?

5. When will you do what ? (timetable/schedule)
This must be done in 1 hour. After that all groups will present their outcome

6. Let’s go.. (practical content of the assignment (s))
You must design a competency based assignment for: a case study, a knowledge assignment
and a skills training assignment. Decide with your team which subject will be done and
work it out, so that you can present the outcome of your hard labour.
