This document outlines the steps for formulating a research problem. It discusses the importance of clearly defining the research problem as the foundation of the entire research study. It provides considerations for selecting a research problem such as interest, magnitude, ability to measure concepts, expertise, relevance, and availability of data. It then describes the 7 steps to formulating a research problem: 1) Identify a broad field of interest, 2) Dissect it into subareas, 3) Select the most interesting subarea, 4) Raise research questions, 5) Formulate objectives, 6) Assess objectives, 7) Double check interest and resources. Defining the research problem clearly from the start is presented as the most critical step of the research process
