Prayer - The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of
heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son,
our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He
descended into hell; the third day He rose again from
the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the
right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence
He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church,
the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Goal : Learn about the Church as recited in the Creed
First, Let’s get to know each other…
Reflect on what you hear...
*New Learning
*Ah-ha's
*Connections
Talk with a partner and the partner will introduce you…
 What's the scoop behind your name? Why did your parents
choose it for you? Did it hold meaning to them?
 Who is your hero? (a parent, a celebrity, an influential person,
a religious person)
 What are your favorite hobbies?
 If you had to describe yourself in three words, it would be…
Report out to the group:
Ch:1 – Review – 2 mins
 review your notes
 consult with your partner to fill in missing points and
seek clarification
 fill in the gaps
Ch:1 – Review
 The Church is the assembly called together by Christ, forming the
People of God.
 God created humanity (us) out of love so that we might share in the
divine life
 Our first parents sinned and lost friendship with God, but God promised
to send a Redeemer and began to implement his plan of salvation
 The process of God’s redemption is called salvation history. It is a
series of promises and covenants b/w God and man.
Ch:2– The Church:
Sacrament of Salvation
This chapter will examine…
the promises and covenants
of God
 how they prepared for Jesus
and the Church.
Ch:2 – Learning Objectives
 God promised to save humanity after the Fall
by sending a redeemer.
 God makes binding promises knows as
Covenants with humanity.
 Understand why God created human beings
The Fall of Adam and Eve
 The Promise after the Fall
 God created our first parents and blessed them
 Go made gave them free will so they could
choose to return his love.
 Example – A person w/o free will is a slave (Slaves
can’t love the master b/c they aren’t free)
 Adam and Eve chose used their freedom to sin
and lost communion and friendship with God
 This event is called the Fall
God confronts Satan after the Fall
 He says he will put enmity b/w Satan and the
woman & her seed. (Gn 3:15)
 READ #1, pg 13
 This is called The Protoevangelium or ‘First
Gospel’ (Gospel means good news).
 God announces that a Messiah & Redeemer will come
and battle with the serpent
 A descendant/offspring of the woman will gain victory
over the serpent
This Promise foreshadows (points toward) the
“woman” as the Blessed Virgin Mary and her
“seed” as Jesus Christ who will redeem the
world and defeat sin and death.
“woman” as the
Blessed Virgin Mary
“seed” as
Jesus Christ
Church
Talk to your partner – discuss the answer
Report out to the group:
In what ways today do we see society
tumble out of control b/c of sin?
Covenants
The Covenant with Noah
 God floods the world b/c of its sinfulness
 Noah alone was righteous and God saved his family
through the Ark
 God made a covenant with humanity through Noah
 Never to destroy everything again.
 All humanity is made in God’s image and can’t be killed
The Covenant with Abraham
 God promises Abraham that he will give him a great
land, make him a great nation and give him a great
name.
 Abraham has Isaac and is called by God to sacrifice his
son.
 READ – Abraham and Isaac section pg. 14-15
Parallels b/w Isaac and Christ
The Covenant with Moses
 Moses as a baby - READ pg.16
 fleeing into the wilderness
 encounter with the burning bush
 return to exile the Israelites.
God is calling the Israelites “my people” showing that God is gathering
(Ch. 1) his assembly to unite them more closely to himself.
The Covenant with Moses
 Monotheism –the doctrine or belief that there is only
one God.
 to put away temptation to workshop false idols
Report out to the group:
 What false idols are we tempted to worship ? What
things in our lives replace God as the #1 priority?
 Free write-share-affirm
The Covenant with Moses
 Mosaic or Sinai Covenant
 Two way agreement they accept
 They will be obedient to the commandments of God
 Tabernacle and Ark of the Covenant – the entire
assembly (qahal) of Israel
The Covenant with Moses
 Moses and the Exodus
 Moses flees
 burning bush command
 Plagues and Passover
 wilderness wanderings.
 Israel falls into idolatry while Moses is on Mt. Sinai
the second time
 They are given more laws (found in book of
Deuteronomy) to separate them from the other
nations
 They were not able to be the light to the Gentiles
that God desired them to be.
The Promise to David
 Israel in the Promised Land desired to have a King
 Samuel anoints Saul the first King of Israel
 (oil of anointing foreshadows the oil of chrism -
Confirmation.
 Symbolizes that they are being anointed as a type of
priest and king.
 Hebrew word messiah and Greek word Christ –
both mean “the anointed one”
 The Messiah, or anointed one, will be chosen by
God to lead and save his people.
The Promise to David
 David unites the tribes of Israel and
makes Jerusalem the capital city.
The takes the Ark of the Covenant
(holds Ten Commandments) into
Jerusalem and it becomes the primary
place of worship for Israel.
 God makes a covenant with David
(page 19).
The Prophets
 Through them God reveals more about the
Redeemer Messiah.
 The Redeemer will make a New Covenant
(Testament means Covenant).
 read Jeremiah 31 on page 20.
 New Covenant will surpass the old covenant
with Israel and God will forgive the sins of
Humanity
Conclusion
 All covenants and promises in the Old
Testament prepare for the New Covenant in
Jesus.
 The New Covenant is eternal and involves the
founding of Jesus’ Church through which he
called together all people into one body, one
communion of faith.
Chapter 3
Explore further these
covenants and promises and
how they are fulfilled in
Jesus and the Church.

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Essential Characteristics of the Church One Holy Catholic Apostolic
  • #8: Factuaul knowledge, expert, retrieval
  • #15: The word "Church" (Latin ecclesia, from the Greek ek-ka-lein, to "call out of") means a convocation or an assembly. It designates the assemblies of the people, usually for a religious purpose.139 Ekklesia is used frequently in the Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was established by God as his holy people.140 By calling itself "Church," the first community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the Church, God is "calling together" his people from all the ends of the earth.
  • #17: As Catholics we routinely use the word “Church” to describe all believers wherever they may be found, the local faith community, and the liturgical assembly
  • #20: comprises that part of the State of South Dakota East of the Missouri River.
