Introduction
• Over the past decade, executives have become increasingly aware
of the importance of technology and innovation as a means for
competitive advantage.
• However, knowing that technology is important and knowing what
to do about it are two very different things.
• Corporate executives therefore face a difficult task in setting
technology' priorities, allocating resources and producing a
supportive culture across business unit and divisional boundaries.
Introduction - Cont---
• Technology is the practical application of scientific or engineering
knowledge to the conception, development or application of
products or offerings, processes or operations.
• In the operations management the most complete definition is that
technology includes methods, means of work, production
procedures, implementation by the user, as well as social
relations, creative talent and sense for organization and
management of knowledge in the direction of its useful application.

Why Technology Matters?
Technology helps an organization in
• Differentiating products
• Reducing costs
• Providing new business opportunities
• Making the right decisions
• Create wealth
• Better Customer Satisfaction
• Easier to Manage Resources
• Raising standard of living and quality of life
• Make faster growth of Nation and world
What is technology management?
• Technology management is a set of management disciplines
that allows organizations to manage its technological
fundamentals to create competitive advantage.
• It is very important for an organization to manage its
technology strategically because when it is not well
managed, it might result into a big loss in the organization.
• Technology management aims at maximizing the cost effectiveness
of investments in technology development which contributes to the
value of an organization.
• If an organization fails to plan for its technology it might encounter
issues like data loss or misuse of that technology by its employees.
• But if the organization creates a frame work and plans for its
technology, its output will increase.
What is technology management? - Cont---
17
• Management of technology, innovation and information have also
emerged as key requirements for success in the 21st century
enterprise.
• Thus, proper management of technological change,
particularly at the productive enterprise level, has become
the most important consideration for development.
What is technology management? - Cont---
Concern of Technology Management
• Technology management is the answer for development of nation and growth of its
economy. Therefore, it is worth-while to frame technological objectives in chosen
areas by comparing ourselves with the technological progress registered by fast
growing countries .
• Technology is moving so quickly today that experts are concerned over the potential
for misuse of technology that many of us have not even implemented directly as yet.
• More businesses than ever before are totally and thoroughly dependent on the
implementation and use of technology for their success.
• Today’s technology management has to worry about how,
where and why (and IF) to deploy cloud computing, artificial
intelligence, Internet of Things (IOT), Big Data, blockchain,
and other buzzword concepts.
• Each new technology is seen as that next big thing — that
tremendous paradigm shift — that will be a “game changer”
for the industry or the market at large.
Concern of Technology Management - Cont---
• In technology management, little things count
• We routinely hear about the big technology decisions that organizations make, but behind
the scenes, there are other key elements that are not discussed, but much more important
to success:
– Alignment with the business vision / goals / plans.
– Supported strategy for how to purchase, deploy, and maintain technology.
– A reasonable, transparent governance model.
– Encouraging a culture of planning, testing, and training.
– Excellent communication across the organization.
Concern of Technology Management - Cont---

Classification of Technology
New Technology
• Any newly introduced or implemented technology that has an explicit
impact on the way a company produces products or provides services.
• The technology could be around for many years, but if it is newly
introduced into an organization, it is considered a new technology.
• Has profound effect on improving productivity and maintaining
competitive business enterprise.
• Examples? : Lectra CAD replacing manual Pattern Making
Classification of Technology
Emerging Technology
• Any technology that is not yet fully commercialized but will
become so within about 5 years.
• It may be currently in limited use but is expected to evolve
significantly.
• Create new industries and may make existing ones obsolete.
• Examples?: Nanotechnology, Genetic engineering, etc
25
Classification of Technology
High Technology
• Refers to the advances or sophisticated technologies.
• Utilized by a wide variety of industries having certain
characteristics.
• High tech companies:
– Employs highly educated people
– Technology is changing at a faster rate
– Competes with technological innovation
– High levels of R & D expense
Examples ?
Classification of Technology
Low Technology
• Refers to the technologies that have saturated large segments of human
society.
• Low technology companies:
– Employs people with relatively low level of education
– Uses manual/semi automated operation
– Low R & D expense
– Technology base used is stable with little change
– Products to satisfy basic human needs
Examples ?
27
Classification of Technology
Medium Technology
• A wide set of technologies that fall between high and
low technologies
• Usually refer to mature technologies that are more
amendable than others to technology transfer
• Examples : Automotive industries
Appropriate Technology
• Technology that is balanced between the level of technology
utilized and the resources required for its optimal use.
• The technology could be at any level – low, medium or high.
• Results in better use of labor resources and better
production efficiency.
