What is Science? Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system .
What is Physical Science? The science of matter and energy and their interactions
1.2 Measurement The system used throughout most of the world is SI or the metric system. Check out the prefixes in table 1.3 Why use it? Length - meter Volume - m^3 Mass - kg Density - g/cm^3 Temp. - Celsius Time - seconds
1.1 Data: Information scientists gather Science Skills: Observe, Infer, Estimate, Measure, Predict, Classify, Hypothesize, Record and Organize, Analyze
Experiment Controlled Experiment Constant: Stays the same Variable: Thing that is changed in the experiment
Scientific Methods Designing and planning an experiment Look at the steps and write them as efficiently as possible. Focus on information you don’t know
Fact, Theory, Laws Fact is a true statement Law describes how event occurs Theory describes why event occurs
What do Scientists do? What skills do they need? How do they solve problems?
Measuring SI units: What are they? What do the prefixes mean? System International?
Measurement Length - meter - m Volume - cubic meter/liter - cm 3 and l Mass and weight - kilogram - kg Density - mass divided by volume - g/cm 3 How much matter is packed into a given space
Measurement Temperature - Celsius - o C Time - Seconds- s
Scientific Notation What is it? Why is it useful? Practice problems page 15 Numbers 1-3
1.3 Graphing Three kinds of graphs 1. Circle Graphs 2. Bar Graphs 3. Line Graphs Give an example of when each kind of graph would be useful.
1.4 Science Technology and Tools The study of matter can be identified as two connected sciences, chemistry and physics What is the difference between physics and chemistry?
Applied Science Sometimes technology is referred to as applied science What are three examples of tools that scientists use to observe things? How are science and technology different?
