Putting Dialogue Education Into Practice An Introduction to Jane Vella’s Model of Instructional Design
Dialogue Education “ Teaching with dialogue education involves listening to learners at every level, respecting them as subjects or decision makers of their own learning, and evoking their innate power.”  p. xix, Vella’s text On Teaching and Learning
Dialogue Education “ Teaching can get in the way of learning.  The design of dialogue education, formal or informal, protects learners in their learning from teachers and teaching that could steal the learning opportunity from learners by  telling, or “helping.” p. xxiii, Vella’s text On Teaching and Learning
Vella’s Assumptions about Learners and the Learning Process
Teaching vs. Learning Definition of “teach”: to  impart knowledge  of or skill; give instruction;  Definition of “learn”: to  acquire knowledge  of or skill by study, instruction, or experience  A learning task is an open question put to learners who have all the resources they need to respond. New content that is learned inductively or deductively

7 Steps of Planning
The Four I’s Types of Learning Tasks Inductive  work – connects learners with what they already know Input  – course content; new material Implementation  – try it out Integration  – asks learners how they will integrate new learning into their lives
Types of Input: Instructional Strategies Learning Methods Lecture Forums, panels, symposiums Interactive TV, video Discussion Case Studies / Group Projects Online/distance learning Learning Contracts Critical Thinking Techniques Demonstration / Simulation Mentoring Learners teach the content Level of Engagement Low Low Moderate Moderate Moderate Moderate to High Moderate to High Moderate to High Moderate to High Moderate to High High
Class Exercise in Using Vella’s Four I’s. Form three groups.  Using Vella’s Four I’s  (Induction, Input, Implementation, and Integration) , design a session in which you teach us how to prepare a holiday meal (i.e., Thanksgiving). Mr. Bean's Christmas turkey   You will have 45 minutes to prepare your presentation and no more than 10 to deliver it. Plan to share roles in your teaching session. Existing resources include: paper, markers, access to Internet (Google searches, video, YouTube, etc), your own experience, photocopying, etc)
