Gianlorenzo Bernini was an Italian artist born in 1598 who became one of the most accomplished sculptors and architects of the Baroque era. As a young boy, his talent was recognized by the Pope who ensured he received the best education. He went on to receive over 30 commissions from Pope Urban VIII, including becoming the Architect of St. Peter's Basilica at age 30. Some of his most famous works included the baldachin in St. Peter's, sculptures like Ecstasy of St. Teresa, and redesigning St. Peter's square. He was the leading artist in 17th century Rome and made significant contributions to the city's architecture and art.
