- 3. Responsibilities My responsibilities as your teacher: To treat you with care and respect as an individual. To provide an orderly classroom environment. To provide the necessary discipline. To provide the necessary motivation. To teach you the required content. Your responsibilities as my students: To treat me with respect and care as an individual. To attend classes regularly. To be cooperative and not disruptive. To study and complete your work. To learn the required material.
- 4. About Mrs. Jones Grew up in Corpus Christi, TX Married 3 daughters, 1 son 3 dogs Likes: reading, writing, music, scrapbooking, art journals, running/fitness/yoga, computers/technology
- 5. Classroom Procedures Why do we have procedures? A procedure is a way that we do things. To do things right we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: To place a phone call, we need to enter numbers in the right order. To bake a delicious dessert, we need to follow the steps in the recipe. So, to be successful in learning, we need to follow some simple procedures.
- 6. Entering The Classroom The bell doesn’t start the class. Mrs. Jones doesn’t start the class. YOU start the class. Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class. Enter the classroom quietly. Go directly to your assigned seat. Immediately begin bellwork (this will usually be reading but check daily to make sure).
- 7. During Instruction Listen to the teacher with full attention. No pencil sharpening, talking, or whispering. Ask permission to speak by raising your hand. Ask questions related to the subject . Other questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction. After instruction, make sure you understand the lesson. If not, ask questions by mentioning which part you didn’t understand.
- 8. While You Are Working Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. If you didn’t understand- ask help from other students sitting around you. ( Ask 3 before me .) If they also don’t understand, ask me to explain it. If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best assistance. Talking to each other should be no louder than a whisper. The person sitting on the other side of the room should not be interrupted by your noise. Respect each other and be friendly. Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.
- 9. After You Are Done Put the correct heading on your paper. Check your work and the directions once more to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. If the assignment is to be turned in, do so. Then- read, read, read! Students are not allowed to sit and do nothing. You must be working until the end of class.
- 10. Leaving The Classroom Clean your work area. Take all garbage to the trash can. Pick up underneath/around your desk. Wait for the teacher to dismiss you . After you have permission to leave, please exit the classroom quietly.
- 11. IF THE TEACHER RAISES HER HAND or RINGS THE BELL : Stop whatever you are doing at that moment. ( Freeze! ) Face the teacher and wait silently . Notify any classmates who haven’t noticed that the teacher has raised her hand. No talking or whispering. All of your attention should be given to the teacher.
- 12. Class Expectations I will treat you with respect, so that you will know how to treat me. Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else. If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it. If you can't solve the problem or choose not to, I will do something. What I do depends on the special person and the special situation. If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I'm not sure that is fair”, and we will talk.
- 13. Classroom Discussions PLEASE participate. Everyone has something important to say. We want to hear what you have to say. If your question is off the topic , write it down and ask later .
- 14. Heading Example Assigned number goes in top right hand corner. Name goes below number. Date goes below name. Put heading on top line. Be specific with information. 12 John Smith Aug. 23, 2010 ______________________Unit 1 Spelling______________________________
- 15. Turning In Assignments Put the proper heading on your paper. Put your paper in the colored file folder for your block. I grade papers with names on them. Papers with no name will be placed in the “no name” folder and will not be graded. If you realize one of these papers belongs to you, I will accept it with a 20 point deduction for being late.
- 16. When You Are Tardy Enter quietly Place tardy note on your desk. Have a seat and quietly take out your materials. Get the assignment from a classmate . You will not be excused from any work you missed.
- 17. When You Are Absent It is your responsibility to find out what work you missed. It is your responsibility to complete the work and turn it in. Find out what work you missed from a classmate. Check the daily folder of the day you were absent for any handouts or worksheets that were given out. If you missed a test get with me and we will arrange a time to make up the test.
- 18. Handouts Handouts that you need to keep “forever” will be copied on colored paper. Always keep and file anything I give you on colored paper in the appropriate place in your language arts notebook. Other papers not on colored paper can be discarded at the end of the six weeks.
- 19. Homework Procedures Reading and vocabulary will always be a “standing” homework assignment. Other homework will be assigned on an as needed basis. If homework is not turned in early, it must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. Points will be deducted from late homework.
- 20. Passes There are two class passes. There can be no more than two students out of class at the same time. You may go to the restroom without asking permission if: There is a pass available I am not talking/teaching Do not leave while instruction is going on. Excessive requests to leave the room, being gone a long time, and/or going somewhere other than where you have permission to be will result in the loss of the privilege to leave class. Teacher will write passes to any other locations and you will need to ask permission to leave class.
- 21. Tickets You will receive one ticket at the beginning of each 6 weeks. The ticket can be used once for either: One daily grade (turn in ticket for a 100) OR One tardy Lost tickets will not be replaced.
- 22. School-Wide Announcements No talking is allowed during announcements.
- 23. My “Stuff” Items that are off limits to all students: Anything on or in my desk My cell phone My ipod The storage cabinet The computer (unless you have permission)
- 24. Whining & Complaints Whining This classroom is a “No Whining Zone”. That means there will be no whining for any reason. Everything I do is in your best interest, so please trust me…and respect the “No Whining Zone” this year. Complaints Complaining poisons the atmosphere. No complaining is allowed unless you are able to offer an alternative.
- 25. And Finally… Mrs. Jones reserves the right to: Change a procedure Delete a procedure Add a procedure in order to maintain a well-managed classroom.
- 26. REMEMBER… The best students aren’t necessarily the most intelligent students…but they are almost always the best organized students. They read their assignments, take good notes, keep their work organized, ask questions, and listen with focus.
