Characteristics
Dynamically Scalable
• Anybody can obtain as much or as few online computing
resources as they require at any particular point of time.
Device Independent
• Cloud computing resources can be accessed from any type of
computer. Provided that it has an internet connection and a
web browser.
Task Centric
• The usage model is based entirely around what users want to
achieve, rather than any particular s/w, h/w or n/w
infrastructure. Users do not have to purchase or install
anything before using a cloud computing resource. Nor do
they have to maintain or pay for anything during periods in
which no resources are being used.
Charged on a usage basis
• It has variable cost. All of the cost of cloud computing are on
a per usage or variable basis.
Three ways to Cloud Compute
SaaS
IaaSPaaS
SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS all involve a cloud vendor
supplying servers on which their customers
can store data and run applications
• Free or paid via subscription
Software as a Service
Existing Computer Apps are accessed over the
internet rather than being installed on a local
computing device or in local data center
Pros &
Cons
• Accessible from any type of computer
• Facilitates collaborate working
• Generic apps not always suitable for business
use…
Examples
• Rapid development @ low cost
Platform as a Service
Provides environment and tools for creating new
online apps
Pros &
Cons
• Private or public deployment
• Limits developers to provider languages and
tools
• Risk of vendor lock-in
Examples
Infrastructure as a Service
Cloud suppliers provide online infrastructure on
which their customers can store and develop and
run whatever apps they want. Allows existing
apps to be run on a cloud supplier’s h/w

The Three Reasons to Cloud ComputeCloud Computing will be essential to
remain competitive
1.
• Cloud computing helps firms to remain
competitive as customers can reap cost savings
of up to 80% to cloud compute than to run an in-
house data centre.
2.
• Cloud computing ables firms to move quickly and
easily than their competitors.
3.
• Cloud computing can be compare with electric
grid as it is freed companies from having to
generate their own energy in-house.
“Minimum Resource, Maximum
Utilization”
1.
• Cloud computing removes the need for most
users to have high-power PCs and laptops.
2.
• Lower-power computers based around processors
such as Intel's Atom are perfectly sufficient to
run cloud apps.
3.
• Cloud collaboration and virtual meeting tools
allows some people to work from home
The Next Generation Cloud
Cloud computing will be driven not only by a desire and
necessity to do existing things in more effective ways,
but by a demand to do entirely new things..
Security Concerns
To use Cloud Computing Services “Safe Web
Access” is necessary. In includes:
1.
•Setting a strong password
2.
•Ensuring antivirus, antispyware and firewall software
are installed
3.
•Ensuring that your OS & web browser(s) are always
updated with the latest security patches.
4.
•Not to open suspicious e-mails that may contain
malware.
