Collaborative Practices in Community Arts Education will explore the
complexities art educators encounter when working in diverse community settings.
Evidence shows informed methods of collaborative practices strengthens the
capacity for schools, community-based organizations and individuals to participate
in arts learning that
is deep rich and
meaningful.
This course offers an
opportunity to
understand historical
and current issues in
collaborative arts education practices. Readings, in depth discussions, panels,
exhibits, art-making and an action research project will provide insights for
integration into current and future practice.
Course Objectives:
• Explore history, theories, and philosophy shaping community arts education.
• Examine pedagogical issues that arise when working with varying perspectives
and cultures.
• Explore ways community arts collaborations are structured and motivated.
• Become familiar with issues of sustainability.
• Engage with community artists and TRUCE youth collaborating and making art
for Macy Gallery.
• Conduct a collaborative action research project for practice both in and out of the
classroom.
