- 2. COMMON CORE STANDARDS Common Core Standards (CCS) are a clear set of high quality academic standards in Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA). The standards is developed by teachers, parents, school administrators, and experts from across the States and led by Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA). - 3. COMMON CORE STANDARDS The Common Core is informed by the highest, most effective standards from states across the United States and countries around the world. The standards define the knowledge and skills students should gain throughout their K-12 education in order to graduate high school prepared to succeed in entry- level careers, introductory academic college courses, and workforce training programs. COMMON CORE STANDARDS CCS provide a clear and consistent framework for educators, and also a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers. The actual implementation of the Common Core, including how the standards are taught, the curriculum developed, and the materials used to support teachers as they help students reach the standards, is led entirely at the state and local levels. - 5. COMMON CORE STANDARDS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS The standards establish what students need to learn, but they do not dictate how teachers should teach. Teachers will devise their own lesson plans and curriculum, and tailor their instruction to the individual needs of the students in their classrooms. The standards establish guidelines for English language arts (ELA) as well as for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects.
