Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to
another.
Process of exchanging
● Information
● Ideas
● Thoughts
● Feelings
● Emotions
Types Of Communication
Verbal Communication
Exchange of information using words including both spoken and written word.
Most important aspects of verbal communication are
● Language
● Timing and relevance
● Intonation
● Clarity
Nonverbal Communication
Information is exchanged through non-verbal communication in various ways.
It is sometimes referred as body language.
● Gesture
● Facial expression
● Body space and proximity
● Eye contact
● Personal appearance
● Posture
Written Communication
Another important form of communication is the written communication. It is
best method when communicator and recipient are beyond oral
communication media.
Which includes
● Reports
● Illustrations
● E-mail
● Tenders
Levels Of Communication
Intrapersonal Communication
Communicators internal use of language or thought It can be useful to
envision interpersonal communication occur in the mind of the individual
● Takes place individually
● Self motivation and self determination
● Without much internal dialogues this
communication does not take place
Interpersonal Communication
Exchange of information between two or more people
This can be conducted using direct or indirect method of communication
Successful interpersonal communication occurs when sender and receiver
understand the message
● It can be formal or informal
● Advantageous due to immediate feedback
Mass Communication
Imparting and exchanging information on a large scale to wide range of
people
Related to newspaper magazine and book publishing radio television and film
● Mediator is required to transmit
● It is more persuasive in the nature than any other form of communication
Organizational Communication
Takes place at different hierarchical levels
Its main function is to inform persuade and promote goodwill
Flow of communication my be either formal or informal
● Internal operational: all communication occur in conducting work within
an organization
● External operational: all work related communication that an organization
does with people outside
Flow Of Communication
Upward Communication
Process of information flowing from lower level of hierarchy to upper levels
● Lower dignity to upper dignity
● Depends on organizational culture
Downward communication
The flow of information from higher level of management to subordinate
individuals working in an organization
● Upper dignity to lower
● It is adequately balanced by upward
communication
Diagonal Communication
Sharing of information among different structural levels within a business
● Flow in all direction and cut across functions and levels in an organization
● It is quick and efficient
● It is encouraged by social networking
Lateral Communication
Communication that takes place in the same level of hierarchy in an
organization communication between peers managers of same level
Advantages
● Facilitates coordination of tasks
● Facilitates coordination among team members
● Helps in solving various organizational problems
● It is a means of information sharing
