Introduction
Nowadays, Construction of high rise building is a
basic need because of scarcity of land. Thus extension
of buildings horizontally is not possible therefore they
have to be extended vertically to meet the needs of the
rapid population growth.
Safety of human lives and property is of utmost
importance and so is the economy of the structure.
The structure has to be safe and economical.
RCC Structures
 RCC means Reinforced Cement Concrete, i.e., cement
concrete reinforced with steel bars, steel mesh etc. to
increase the tension withstanding capacity of the
structure.
 Cement Concrete can take up immense compression
but is weak in tension whereas steel is good in
withstanding both tension and compression.
Components of RCC Structure
 RCC Footings
 RCC Columns
 RCC Beams
 RCC Slab
About Composite Structures
 Composite Member- Structural member
consisting of steel structural units , rolled or built up
and cast in-situ concrete connected together in such a
manner that they act monolithically.
 Steel and Concrete may be arranged to produce an
ideal combination of strength with steel efficient in
tension and concrete in compression.
About Composite Structure
1. The concrete slab is connected to the steel beam with
the help of shear connectors.
Components of Composite
Structures
 Concrete Slab
 Steel Beams
 Composite Columns
 Shear Connectors
Components of Composite
Structure
Concrete Slab: It is an RCC Slab. RCC slab is connected
to a steel beam such that it acts as a composite
member.
Components of Composite
Structure
 Composite Beams: A steel concrete
composite beam consists of a steel beam,
over which a reinforced concrete slab is cast
with shear connectors. The composite action
reduces the beam depth.
SHEAR CONNECTORS
• Shear connections are very essential for steel concrete
constructions.
• They integrate the compression capacity of supported
concrete slab with supporting steel beams to improve
the load carrying capacity and overall rigidity.
Shear connectors
CRITERIA FOR DESIGN OF SHEAR
CONNECTORS
o To transmit longitudinal shear along the interface
o To prevent separation of steel beam and concrete slab
at the interface
1. Flexible shear connectors
2. Rigid shear connectors
3. Anchorage shear
connectors
Flexible shear connectors
They consists of headed studs, channels or tees
welded on the top flange of the steel beam
They derive their stress resistance through
bending and undergo large deformation before
failure
Rigid shear connectors
 They derive their resistance from bearing pressure of
concrete
 They sustain only a small deformation
Examples:
 Short bars
 Angles
 T- sections
Anchorage shear connectors
 They resist longitudinal shear
 They prevent separation of steel beam and concrete
slab along the interface through bond
Components of Composite
Structure
Composite Column: Column is conventionally
a compression member in which the steel
element is a structural steel section. There are
two types of composite columns used in
practice, which are Concrete Encased,
Concrete filled.
Components of Composite
Structures
Beam – Column Joint
Advantages
• Faster to erect
• Lighter
• Better quality control
• Reduced site time - Fast track Construction
• Large column free space and amenable for alteration
• Less material handling at site
• Less percentage of floor area occupied by structural
elements
• Has better ductility and hence superior lateral load
behavior; better earthquake resistance
