This document discusses competencies for managing a personal learning environment (PLE). It begins by exploring whether students possess the needed competencies for building a PLE, such as self-cognition, self-organization, self-planning, and realizing their own competencies. It then defines competencies and different types of competencies. Several competency models are examined, including those for engineers, software engineers, and personal and professional development. Key competencies for PLE management are identified, such as choosing learning resources and communication channels, understanding one's professional position, and planning for professional development. The document concludes that students require support to develop all the competencies needed for effective self-organized learning using a PLE.
