INTRODUCTION
 A composite material is defined as a material system which consist
of a mixture or a combination of two or more different materials
which are insoluble in each other and differ in form or chemical
composition.
 Composite materials should comprise component materials that are
congenital with each other. In the field of high modulus composites,
resin-matrix composites find considerable interest is easy to
fabricate into engineering structures.
 In the case of metal matrix composites, the working temperature is
much higher.hence, both chemical and mechanical harmony are
major issues.
 The aim of this chapter is to provide the readers with an
insight into the factors that affects the properties of Al/SiC
composites and the most important response parameters,
associated to mechanical, heat treatment, and corrosion
behavior.
 Aluminum silicon carbide alloy composite materials are
widely used for a many number of applications like
engineering structures, aerospace and marine application,
automotive bumpers, sporting goods and so on.
OBJECTIVE
 The Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are made by dispersing
a reinforcing material into a metal matrix. The achieving a
homogeneous distribution of reinforcement within the matrix
is one such challenge and this affects directly on the
properties and quality of composite.
 Its very light weight, high strength, stiffness and exhibit
greater resistance to correction, oxidation and wear.
 In this study hybrid aluminum matrix composite was
fabricated through stir casting route.
Fabrication of Al5083/B4C surface composite by friction
stir processing and its tribological Characterization
Narayana Yuvaraj a, Sivanandam Aravindanb,Vipina
(Accepted 8 February 2015)
Content:
Improved surface properties with the retainment of bulk properties
are necessary for a component for enhanced wear characteristics.
Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce such surface
composites. Fabrication of 5083 aluminum alloy with reinforced
layers of boron carbide (B4C) through FSP was carried out.
Micro and nano sized B4C particles were used as reinforcements.
The friction processed surface composite layer was analyzed through
optical and scanning electron microscopically studies.
The number of passes and the size of reinforcement play a vital
role in the development of surface composites by FSP. Mechanical
properties of the friction stir processed surface composites were
evaluated through micro hardness and universal tensile tests.
LITERATURE REVIEW
 Micro structural and corrosion behavior of Al/SiC metal
matrix composites
H.M. Zakaria (Accepted 16 March 20014)
Content:
 Aluminum alloys reinforced with ceramic particulates have
significant potential for structural applications due to their high
specific strength and stiffness as well as low density.
 These properties have made particle-reinforced metal matrix
composites (MMCs) an attractive candidate for the use in weight-
sensitive and stiffness-critical components in aerospace,
transportation and industrial sectors .
 Corrosion behavior is very important parameter for assessing the
application potential of composites as structural materials.
 Metal to Metal Worn Surface of AA6061 Hybrid
Composites Casted by Stir Casting Method
K.Umanath,S.T.Selvamani,K.Palanikumar and D.Niranjanavarma(2014)
Content:
 Aluminium alloy (AA6061) is reinforced with fine particulates are
produced composite and discussed in this work. The reinforced
aluminium alloy hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) with 5
to 25% vol.
 Fractions of Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide reinforcements
were created by stir casting technique. The metal to metal wear
behavior of these hybrid composite and that of un-reinforced alloy
was investigated by pin-on-disc wear testing machine.
 The optical micrographs in use for the micro structure investigation
of the hybrid composite show that the Silicon Carbide and
Aluminium Oxide particulates reinforcement are regularly
distributed in the matrix materials.
 Study on ageing behaviour of silicon nitride reinforced
Al6061 Composites
Praveen J Mane , K L Vishnu Kumar (2014)
Content:
 Aluminium alloy especially 6000 series have the unique property
of undergoing ageing or precipitation hardening due to theformation
of Mg2Si precipitates in the alloy.
 The matrix phase of these alloy series when added with
reinforcements like Si3N4 undergo enhanced increment in hardness,
strength and load bearing capacity due to formation of high
dislocation density.
 In this investigation the ageing behavior of particulate
reinforcements of Si3N4 particles in Al6061 metal matrix composite
is compared to that of unreinforced Al 6061 base alloy. Both the
composite and base alloy were subjected to ageing at solutionizing
temperature of 525°C and ageing temperature of 195ºC.
 Manufacturing of aluminum composite material using stir
casting process
Muhammad Hayat Jokhio & Muhammad Ibrahim
Panhwar,[Vol 30,NO.1, January,2011]
Content:
 In composites, materials are combined in such a way as to enable us
to make better use of their parent material while minimizing to some
extent the effects of their deficiencies. The simplest term
‘composites’ gives indication of the combinations of two or more
material in order to improve the properties .
 To composite materials for adjusting to the global need for reduced
weight, low cost, quality, and high performance in structural
materials.(AMCs) areas of aerospace and automotive industries
include the performance economic and environmental benefits.
 Development of Aluminum Based Silicon Carbide Particulate
Metal Matrix Composite
Manoj,S.Dwivedi,D.D.,Lakhvir,S.andVikas,C.(2009)
Content:
 The aim involved in designing MMCs is to combine the desirable
attributes of metal and ceramics. The addition of high strength, high
modulus refractory particles to a ductile metal matrix produces a
material whose mechanical properties are intermediate between the
matrix alloy and the ceramic reinforcement.
 Metal have a useful combination of properties such as high strength,
ductility and high temp. resistance, but sometimes have low
stiffness, whereas ceramics are stiff and strong, through brittle.
 An Investigative Review on Thermal Characterization of
Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites
S. A. Mohan Krishna, Dr. T N Shridhar, Dr. L Krishnamurthy
Content:
 Composite materials have become cynosure among all materials
that have applications in profusion. The applications of these
materials are absolutely appreciative and applicable in almost all
areas of mechanical engineering.
 The mechanical characterization of these materials has become
common nowadays. But the thermal characterization of hybrid metal
matrix composites is increasingly important in a wide range of
applications.
 Aluminium Silicon alloys in particular finds extensive and
increased applications in industries due to their properties viz., high
fluidity, low melting point, high strength, corrosion resistance, good
casting characteristics and lower coefficient of thermal expansion.
