Generation of Computers:
Based on the characteristics of various computers developed from time to time,
they are categorized as generation of computers.
(1942-1955) (1955-1964) (1964-1975) (1975-1989) (1989-Present)
3
First Generation Computers: Time Period : 1942 to 1955 .
Technology : Vacuum. Tubes
Size : Very Large
Processing : Very Slow
Characterized By: Magnetic Drums
• Magnetic Tapes
• Difficult to program
• Used machine language
& assembly language
4
5
• The main features of the first
generation are −
• Vacuum tube technology
• Unreliable
• Supported machine language only
• Very costly
• Generated a lot of heat
• Slow input and output devices
• Huge size
• Need of AC
• Non-portable
• Consumed a lot of electricity
• Some computers of this generation
were −
• ENIAC
• EDVAC
• UNIVAC
• IBM-701
• IBM-650
Second Generation Computers: Time Period : 1955 to 1964
Technology : Transistors
Size: : Smaller
Processing : Faster than 1st
generation computers
Characterized By:-
• Magnetic Cores
• Magnetic Disk
• Used high level language
• Easier to program 6
7
• The main features of second
generation are −
• Use of transistors
• Reliable in comparison to first
generation computers
• Smaller size as compared to first
generation computers
• Generated less heat as compared to
first generation computers
• Consumed less electricity as
compared to first generation
computers
• Faster than first generation
computers
• Still very costly
• AC required
• Supported machine and assembly
languages
• Some computers of this generation
were −
• IBM 1620
• IBM 7094
• CDC 1604
• CDC 3600
• UNIVAC 1108
Time Period: 1964 to 1975
Technology : ICs (Integrated Circuits)
Incorporated many transistors & electronic
circuits on a single chip
Size : Small as compared to 2nd generation computers
Processing : Faster then 2nd generation computers
Third Generation Computers:
Characterized by:-
• Minicomputers accessible
by multiple users from remote terminals.
• IC (Integrated Circuit) 8
9
• The main features of third
generation are −
• IC used
• More reliable in comparison to
previous two generations
• Smaller size
• Generated less heat
• Faster
• Lesser maintenance

Processor)
• IBM-370/168
• TDC-316
Fourth Generation Computers: Time Period : 1975-1989
Technology : VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration)
Incorporated many millions of transistors &
electronic circuits on a single chip
Size : Small as compared to first generation computer
Processing : Faster than previous generation computers
Characterized by:
•The personal computer and user friendly
•micro-programs, very fast processor chip
•High level language, OOP
(Object Oriented Programming)
•VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration)
10
11
• The main features of fourth
generation are −
• VLSI technology used
• Very cheap
• Portable and reliable
• Use of PCs
• Very small size
• Pipeline processing
• No AC required
• Concept of internet was introduced
• Great developments in the fields of
networks
• Computers became easily available
• Some computers of this generation were −
• DEC 10
• STAR 1000
• PDP 11
• CRAY-1(Super Computer)
• CRAY-X-MP(Super Computer)
Fifth Generation Computers: Time Period : 1989 to Present
Technology : ULSI, AI, Robotics, Neural Networks
Development of expert systems to
make decisions in real-life situations
Natural language understanding
Size :Small as compared to previous generation
computers
Processing : Faster than previous generation computers
Characterized by:
•Super large scale integrated chips.
•Artificial intelligence.
• Able to solve highly complex problem including
decision making, logical reasoning.
• Able to use more than one CPU for faster
processing speed.
• Intended to work with natural language. 12
13
• The main features of fifth
generation are −
• ULSI technology
• Development of true artificial
intelligence
• Development of Natural language
processing
• Advancement in Parallel Processing
• Advancement in Superconductor
technology
• More user-friendly interfaces with
multimedia features
• Availability of very powerful and
compact computers at cheaper rates
• Some computer types of
this generation are −
• Desktop
• Laptop
• NoteBook
• UltraBook
• ChromeBook
CONCLUSION
• As a result of the various improvements to the development of the computer
we have seen the computer being used in all areas of life. It is a very useful
tool that will continue to experience new development as time passes.
