Today networking has become an essential aspect of your job search. ...
You must develop relationships and connections within your network to have more
opportunities to advance your career. Attending meetings and social events hosted
by your professional association is a great way to connect with people in your field.
What is Computer network
Definition 1
A computer network is a group of computers that use a set of
common communication protocols over digital interconnections
for the purpose of sharing resources located on or provided by
the network nodes.
8
What is Computer network
Definition 2
A network can be defined as a group of computers and other
devices connected in some ways so as to be able to exchange
data. -Each of the devices on the network can be thought of as a
node; each node has a unique address
9
What is the Nodes
A physical network node is an electronic device that is attached to
a network, and is capable of creating, receiving.
10
Building a Network
A Computer Network is a digital telecommunications network
which allows nodes to share resources.
11
Switch
Switches ...
Have many network interfaces/ports for end hosts to connect to ( Usually 24+)
Provide connectivity to hosts within the same LAN ( Local Area Network )
Do not provide connectivity between LAN / Over the Internet.
12
Note: We will read more about LAN and WAN in the following chapters
13
Herat Kabul
Router
Routers ...
• Have fewer network interface than switches.
• Are used to provide connectivity between LANs.
• Are therefore used to send data over the internet
14
15
Herat Kabul
Firewall
• Monitor and control network traffic based on configured rules.
• Can be placed "inside" the network, or "outside the network.
• Are known as "Next-Generation Firewalls" when they include more
modern and advanced filtering capabilities.

Client
A client is a devices that accesses a service made available by a
server.
18
So … what’s
server ?
Server
A server is a computer or system that provides resources, data,
services, or programs to other computers, known as clients, over
a network. In theory, whenever computers share resources with
client machines they are considered servers. There are many
types of servers, including web servers, mail servers.
19

21
Interfaces
22
A network interface card (NIC) is a hardware component,
typically a circuit board or chip, which is installed on a
computer so that it can connect to a network
RJ-45 – (RJ=Registered Jack )
23
RJ45 is a type of connector commonly used for Ethernet networking. It looks
similar to a telephone jack, but is slightly wider. Since Ethernet cables have an
RJ45 connector on each end, Ethernet cables are sometimes also called RJ45
cables.
The "RJ" in RJ45 stands for "registered jack," since it is a standardized
networking interface. The "45" simply refers to the number of the interface
standard. Each RJ45 connector has eight pins, which means an RJ45 cable
contains eight separate wires. If you look closely at the end of an Ethernet
cable, you can actually see the eight wires, which are each a different color.
Four of them are solid colors, while the other four are striped.
RJ-45 – (RJ=Registered Jack )
24
Ethernet
25
• Ethernet is a collection of network protocols/standards.
• For the purpose of this lesson, we will focus on types of cabling as defined by
Ethernet standards.
• Ethernet is a type of communication protocol that connects computers within
what’s called a “local area network (LAN)” and a “wide area network (WAN).”
LAN and WAN connect various devices, such as laptops and printers, within
homes, buildings, and even small neighborhoods.
• Users closely associate the term “Ethernet” with the physical connection
between a computer or a router. That is because your laptop usually has an
Ethernet port where you plug in one end of a cable and connect the other to
a router. However, as mentioned, the word refers to the communication
standard itself.
Network Protocols
26
• A network protocol is an established set of rules that determine how data is
transmitted between different devices in the same network. Essentially, it allows
connected devices to communicate with each other, regardless of any differences
in there internal processes, structure or design. Network protocols are the reason
you can easily communicate with people all over the world, and thus play a
critical role in modern digital communications.
Quiz
27
Your Company wants to purchase some network hardware to which they can plug
the 30 PCs in your department. which type of network device is suitable?
1: A Router
2: A Firewall
3: A Switch
4: A Server
Exercises
28
1. What is the difference between a
network and the Internet?
2. what about the firewall on your
compute ?
