INTRODUCTION
Textbooks are essential tools for teaching and learning process. They are beneficial by school
teachers when preparing lessons, also textbooks are an important tool for developing students’
knowledge as they contain different representation that contribute students learning process.
Books are crucial in every student's life because they introduce children to a world of
imagination, provide information of the outside world, improve their reading, writing, and
speaking abilities, and improve memory and intellect.
In school education, textbooks are very important because these are helping in attaining the
school curriculum. Textbooks stated at the heart of educational enterprise. In case of developing
countries like Pakistan where other instructional materials are not available, the role of
textbook is vital. Generally, we know that a textbook is a prescribed book for the student of a
particular age group. It covers the items as given in the syllabus. Such a book forms the basis
of teaching learning in the class.
As a teacher, you'll need to make many decisions, and one of those is how you want to use the
textbook. As good as they may appear on the surface, textbooks do have some limitations. The
following are some strengths and weaknesses of class IX English textbooks, along with ways
of overcoming those difficulties.
The Objectives of the study
a. To analyze the textbook in term of
i. Academic aspects such as content, language, exercise, illustration, language skills and
materials and grammatical and communicative aspects.
ii. Physical aspect such as cover page, printing, type size, binding, paper quality, size of the
text book.
b. To recommend some pedagogical implications

and Vibha Parthasarathi was the chief advisor of this
textbook development committee. There are 8
members on the committee and one member
coordinator. Out of 8 members, 4 female members,
and 4 male members.

PHYSICAL QUALITIES
It is important to take into consideration the physical structure and layout of a textbook
for its significance in education. A few of the questions to look at are.
1. Is the book easily identifiable by the student?
2. Is the layout user-friendly and easy to use?
3. Does the general format of the book facilitate learning?
Number of Page: This text book is cover up from the page no-1 to page no-142
Quality of Pages: Investigator have seen class IX English book the quality comparison is far
better. Also, the bind is good. Keeping is mind there are made up of recycled paper that's why
the quality is not good and also because they have to reduce the cost for poor people to
afford to buy it.
Print Quality and Picture Quality: The book was produced on 60 gsm paper, even though
the original NCERT is printed on 80 gsm. The book rips within a week, even with careful
handling, and the page is quite light with poor printing colour.
Weight of the Book: The weight of the NCERT class IX English book around 380 grams with
durable lightweight binding.
Colors Used: Red, green, orange and blue are the primary colors was used on this book. All
colours eventually will result into generation of white colour are used in background and the
absence of all color was produce black.
BOOK APPEARANCE: - Even though it's not advisable to judge a book by its cover, students
are drawn to books because of their appearance. The English seemed more enticing because to
the colors selected to produce contrast and a beautiful effect. The only things about it that I did
not like were its translucent plastic cover, which you should not use, and the fact that it usually
starts tearing off after a while.
THICKNESS OF BOOK: - The book is moderately thick and not too heavy or bulky for the
students. It consisted of a total of 142 pages and the cover was flexible but making it heavy.

COVER PAGE: - The cover page was average. the Class IX English book is "sky blue" and
only uses brown, black and white. The colors used were nice. The Author's and Publisher's
names were not mentioned. The class was mentioned. it was also mentioned that the book
comes with an Online Support which was also an attractive element.
The physical aspect is also important aspect of the textbook. In regard to this aspect, the
researcher observed different physical areas of the textbook carefully. The cover page of the
textbook is attractive, it does not seem durable. The printing is clean. The type size of the letters
of the textbook seems appropriate for the level of the students. The paper quality of the textbook
is good. Generally, the weaknesses of the physical aspect of the textbook have not been found
very serious. It needs minor correction to improve the quality of physical aspect
of the textbook.
CONTENT
Teacher Notes: The teacher's opening note, which outlines the teacher's role and
responsibilities for the chapter, is the best portion of the book. It demonstrates just how this
English book differs from other books. It is more important that students relate the material to
their everyday life and are satisfied with the course.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
This textbook of English aims to enable the students to develop a understanding of English
language, literature and communication among them.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: - the main aim of this book are-
• To develop the basic language skills such listening, speaking, reading and writing in
English
• Improve vocabulary and spelling accuracy
• Understand the poem, prose, drama and language structure
Textual Material: -
Secondary school textbooks need to utilize a language suitable for the target audience. The text
should include interesting facts and other motivational elements. Students should be
encouraged to participate in various types of learning activities. The text should stimulate
higher-order thinking without sacrificing a lower cognitive level.
Appropriateness of language:
In this regard, the researcher has found the following strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths
I. The language used in the textbook is understandable.
II. The textbook contains formal language.
III. The language used in the textbook is suitable for the level of the students.
Weaknesses
Some vocabulary words such as disinfected, enthusiasm, continuations, simultaneously etc.
used in the textbook are found for the students.
Exercises
The researcher has found the following strengths and weaknesses in case of exercises
Strengths
I. The textbook tries to present the exercises into systematic form.
II. The exercises are graded from simple to complex.
III. The exercises have coverage of contents.
Weaknesses
I. It lacks sufficient number of practice exercises for pair and group work in the
textbook.
II. The exercises of the textbook are not so oriented towards creative learning.
Picture Used: The visuals used in the textbook are of great quality, make use of very vivid
colors, and can be found in abundance in the book. There is a mix of different types of images
used in the text: Photos, graphs, illustrations, and hybrid photos.
Strengths of the textbook
The questions asked regarding the strengths of the textbook tries to find out the strong point of
the textbook on the whole in terms of experience of teaching it. The teachers have pointed out
the following strengths of the textbook:
• The book itself is top and strong.
• It matches the level of the students.
• The lessons are useful and important.
• It is important for the new generation.
• It helps to develop the verbal skills and critical thinking power.
b. Weaknesses of the Textbook
The questions asked tries to find out the weaknesses of the textbook on the whole in terms of
experience of teaching it. The teachers are found having the following weakness
of the textbook:
• Grammatical sections are quite little.
• Exercises are time consuming.
• Pictures are not highly useful to motivate classroom students
• Some words are difficult for the students.
Suggestions for the improvement of the textbook
The questions asked sought the suggestion from the teachers to improve the quality of the
textbook on the whole. Most of the suggested that the picture should be clear and useful. Their
quality should be increased. They suggest increasing grammatical section. The teachers
strongly suggested providing equal focus on four language skills: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing.
Textbooks for secondary education must use language appropriate for the intended readership.
Fascinating information and other inspirational components ought to be included in the content.
It is important to motivate students to engage in a variety of educational activities. Higher-
order thinking should be encouraged in the text without compromising lower-order cognitive
functioning. Promoting inquiry and curiosity: Teachers can foster an environment in the
classroom that welcomes students' interest and promotes inquiry by using the textbook's
assistance. Every chapter contributes to the growth of logical reasoning.
Although the book is informative overall, more interactive components would improve the
learning process.
