This document discusses content-based instruction (CBI) for teaching a second language. CBI organizes lessons around information students will learn rather than a linguistic syllabus. It has two principles: 1) Students learn a second language more successfully when using it to acquire information, and 2) CBI better reflects students' academic needs. In CBI, language is text- and discourse-based, uses integrated skills, and is purposeful for academic, vocational or other goals. The language curriculum follows the subject matter sequence. Objectives include developing language, learning and academic skills, broadening understanding of English-speaking cultures.
