CONTEXT CLUES
Aid the readers in unlocking the meaning of
unknown words in any kind of reading text.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES:
 Synonym context clues – These are words around a difficult word mean the
same as the difficult word.
Ex.
 Miguel was very loquacious. He really loved to talk.
 The rambunctious kids ran out to the bus and climbed on board.They are full
of energy as they jumped and yelled and just couldn’t settle down.
 It was a frigid winter night; the wind is so cold, even the lake was frozen solid.
 We all lined up at the cafeteria.Thank goodness it was time to eat lunch.
Restatement context clue – It means the definition of the word is
given in a form of an easier term.
Ex.
 The poetry was sublime, lofty and moving, and brought tears to
my eyes.
 The dromedary, commonly called a camel, stores fat in its hump.
 These two circles are concentric. In other words, they gave the
same center.
 The man was infuriated: he simply flew into a rage.
Antonym or contrast context clues – These are words around difficult
words that mean the opposite of the difficult word.
Ex.
 Everyone said thatYesinia could be very stubborn. She would never let
someone else talk her out of something once she’d made up her mind.
 The team felt victorious.They knew they would never lose again.
 “Don’t sulk,” said Lin’s mother.“I need someone to talk to me today.”
 We were all very suspicious.We didn’t know who we could trust.
Example context clues – There are specific examples given to have a
clearer idea about a given word.
Ex.
 Geology is the study of many topics, such as rock formations and
biological changes in the Earth.
 Ecclesiastics, such as ministers, priests, and pastors are prime movers of
the church.
 Impediments in understanding the lesson include lack of reading and
poor comprehension skills.
 Legumes, such as peas and beans, produce pods.
Definition or explanation context clue –This context clue explains the target
word in the same sentence or sometimes in the succeeding sentence.
Ex.
 Police officers often must interrogate witnesses, that is, the officers must
ask their witnesses important questions and try to get truthful answers.
 Every time that Jamal went to the library, he tried to expand his
understanding of the world, which means he tried to learn something new.
 The ancient Chinese used the abacus, a device with movable beads that can
be used as a calculator.
 Every timeTaylor went to the store he was very conspicuous. In other
words, he stuck out like a sore thumb.
