Evolution of structured content Significant milestones in structured authoring and component content management • Typesetters would lay out text in preparation for printing or publishing. They would format, style, and arrange text and illustrations for publications. • WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) edited content using style tags and expanded the publication process to the knowledge workers. It also introduced new print formats. • PDF (Portable Document Format) converted paper- based content into device-independent content that can be delivered via the web, but it is not dependent on web technology. page 05 • HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is one of the most significant spin offs from WYSIWYG. Originating from SGML, HTML was developed a means for people in the physics community to communicate. • XML (Extensible Markup Language) is another significant development that also originated from SGML. While HTML was designed to help describe how content is displayed, XML describes data. • DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) was originally developed by IBM and is used today to produce all the content formats mentioned above.

Demand for structured content authoring Why organizations leverage XML and DITA • Consistency — Customers that implement XML and DITA for structured authoring see greater consistency and overall improvement in documentation quality. Content consumers notice it’s easier to locate information, and this helps to build the overall corporate image. • Reuse and Repurpose — Content reuse and repurposing reduces errors, documentation rework, and the information approval process.
