Headline
Writing
Headline
- title of the news story
- windows of the
newspapers as they serve as
the quick source of info for
busy readers
Headline
1. Where readers
(and judges) start
a. Think like a reader
b. Headlines must be accurate
Headline
2. Headline writing process: news, features
• Be quick but don’t hurry.
Remember: judges start here.
• Understand the news peg or feature angle
• Use the key word system but don’t parrot lead
• For news heads: play it straight, summarize the
news
Headline
• For feature heads: be creative.
• Avoid lazy headline writing.
• Don’t fall in love with your own cute,
creative puns. The challenge:
rewrite and make it better.
• Listen to the lone ranger.

DO’s in Writing Headlines
1) Make your headline answer as many W’s possible.
2) The headline should summarize the story.
3) Positive heads are preferable than negative.
4) Omit articles like a, an and the and all forms of
verb to be (is, are, be, etc.) unless needed.
5) Use the strongest word in the first line.
6) The active verb is better than the passive verb.

form for future stories.

on your needs for unit counts.

page

the newspaper
Headline
1. Where readers (and judges) start
a. Think like a reader
b. Headlines must be accurate
2. Four imperatives for writing headlines
Headlines:
– Must be correct (in fact and implication)
– Must connect to ordinary readers
– Must attract attention
– Must set (or match) tone of the article
Headline
4. The TACT test:
Taste-Attractiveness-Clarity- Truth
(Ask these questions of each headline)
• Is it in good taste? Anything offensive in any way? Can
anything be taken a wrong way?
• Does it attract the reader’s/judge’s attention? How can it be
improved without sacrificing accuracy?
• Does it communicate clearly, quickly? Any confusion? Any odd
words, double meanings?
• Is it accurate, true? Proper words used? Is the thrust of
subject-verb true?
