The capacity to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate between messages Includes dimensions that are both receptive and productive Applied to entertainment contexts like newspapers, blogs, Internet communication and TV Can be taught and learned Helps people become critical thinkers, citizens and better communicators.
Public Domain Permission Fair Use Legal Exception Copyrighted print can be used under these conditions:
Fair Use Can get materials at conferences or festivals Law provides copyright protection Culture is copied Not uncertain or unreliable
Copyright Laws and Fair Use Image usage for student projects and for teacher use Internet T.V. Tapes of broadcastings or broadcasts can be used. Teachers may use cable is accessible  Alternative: Cable In The Classroom
Musicals, plays, songs, and operas May be used for 30 seconds per musical composition Multimedia program must have educational value Musical Works
Library can lend it out  Can be installed on multiple computers or at home Library can make copies if necessary Computer Software
Videos, tapes, films, motion pictures, and presentations Students can use 10% or 3 minutes of motion media (as shown below) Teachers can use it in the classroom and copies can be made if stolen Audiovisual
Printed Materials (Short) Poems-less than 2,500 words, 250 word excerpt of greater than 250 stories, articles, essays-less than 2,500 words One chart, diagram, picture or cartoon per book/issue Two pages from illustrated work (like children books) less than 2,500 words
