Media and Technology for ODE At the end of the session… discuss the role of media in DE identify and differentiate the role of each medium choose media according to the context Prepare a plan for implementing in your own courses You will be able to
Media and Technology for ODE In this session… I will make a brief presentation on the topic We will interact and share our experiences You will undertake an individual/group activity
Media and Technology Media and Technology for ODE Integrated multimedia, computer-mediated communication, email, chat, discussion groups and automated response systems. Textual delivery of materials in CD, Floppy; static web-pages Computer-based Video conference Interactive television Video, TV Broadcast Video-based Telephone, audio conference, audio-vision, interactive radio Audiocassette, Radio broadcast Audio-based Self-instructional print materials (partially interactive) Text-books Print-based (text and graphics based) Interactive Non-interactive Media
Educational Implications Availability of greater variety of learning resources Possibility of greater control of learner over learning Improved opportunity for individual learning Emergence of more powerful cognitive tools, eg. Knowledge media High degree of interactivity as the convergence begin Extensive coverage and greater access Increased use and characteristic fall in cost of technology Media and Technology for ODE
Audio-based Media Most commonly used in the form of broadcast radio Cost and access advantages Other forms as audiocassettes, telephone teaching, Interactive radio, etc. Telephone teaching is one of the most commonly used method to support learners Interactivity in audio-based programme if required can be brought through the use of audio vision and interactive radio Lack of quality time and ephemeral nature being the disadvantages of broadcast; the audiocassettes comes in handy Media and Technology for ODE
Video-based Media Distributed through mail, microwave communication and satellite Advantages include the increased quality of materials and thereby learning; involvement of a variety of experts in material preparation Television is the most widely used; but interactive TV or the teleconference (one-way /two-way video) is the order of the day Highly suitable for giving demonstrations and show practical experiences Media and Technology for ODE
Computer-based Media Computers are used for Heightening the learner motivation Helping recall previous experience Activating the learner responses Providing new instructional stimuli Providing systematic and steady feedback Facilitating appropriate practice Sequencing learning appropriately Providing a viable source of information of enhanced learning Media and Technology for ODE
Computer-based Media Computer assisted Instructional package Multimedia in CD Internet and World Wide Web E-mail and Computer-media and Communication Virtual reality and Virtual Universities Possibilities Media and Technology for ODE
Media and Technology for ODE Media: Attributes & Examples Computer-based program Combination of various media Multimedia Use in transparencies, text, multimedia, web Pictures, line drawing Graphics Instructional Video, MPEG Video, QTV Moving pictures Video Audiotape, Audio CD Sound Audio In textbooks, SLMs, Multimedia and Web Written words Text Examples Key Attributes Instructional Media
Choice of Media A ccess C ost T eaching function I nteractivity O rganizational Issues N ovelty S peed Media and Technology for ODE
Approaches to Media Independent Complementary Supplementary Integrated Media and Technology for ODE
Media and Technology for ODE Let’s move to the activity… Identify a topic/course/programme and plan for integration of media elements in it. Prepare a blueprint for action with rationale for the use of different media. (20 minutes) Preferably work in pairs Report to the plenary (20 minutes)
Media and Technology for ODE Thanks. You have my appreciation for interaction…
