Topic : Wiring Three-Way Switches
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Define three-way switch;
2 Describe its operating principles;
3. Wire two three-way switches controlling a single light bulb; and
4. Appreciate the usefulness of a three-way switch.
II. Materials
 Power Supply (230volts)
 2 sets of three-way switches
 PDX cable coded (black & white) THHN wires
 Receptacle and bulb
 Laptop and Projector
Tools
 Multi-tester
 Combination plier
 Side cutting plier
 Standard screw driver
III. Procedures
A. Introduction
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Review of Previous Lesson
o Review single-pole, single-throw switch (SPST)
5. Motivation
o Ask the students if it is possible to control a light bulb with two
switches in different locations.
6. Valuing
o Three-way switches play an important role in house wiring
installation specially in terms of convenience of shutting ON and OFF
a light bulb inside the building.
B. Discussion proper
 What are three-way switches?
o Three-way switches are used to control a light bulb in different
locations.
o Electrically, a typical three-way switch is a single-pole, double-throw
switch.
o Three-way switches have tree terminals: one common and one pair of
travelers.
 How does a three-way switch operate?
o Toggling two three-way switches will cause a closed path to open, or
an open path to close.
C. Activity
Demonstrate the technique in wiring two three-way switch controlling a light
bulb.
Steps in Wiring Two Three-way Switches:
1. Connect the common wire of three-way switch S3 W1 to the source L1.
2. Connect the pair of travelers of three-way switch S3 W1 to the pair of
travelers of three-way switch S3 W2.
3. Connect the common wire of S3 W2 to the first terminal T1 of the light
bulb.
4. Connect wire from wire the second terminal T2 of the light bulb to the
source L2.
5. Review the connections before energizing.
D. Application
As a form of practice, a pair of students will be required to perform the
wiring connection.
E. Abstraction
The wiring of a three-way switch is certainly more complicated than that
of a common single-pole, single-throw switch, but you can figure it out if you
follow the diagram. With a pair of three-way switches, either switch can make
or break the connection that completes the circuits to the light bulb.
IV. Evaluation/Assessment
Each student will perform individually the wiring connection of two three-way
switches controlling a light bulb within 5 minutes observing the criteria below.
