NM Workforce Connection Rachel Weber WIA Career Development Specialist 203 White Mountain Drive Ruidoso, NM 88345 [email_address] Writing a Clear and Effective Resume
Forget the Objective, Use a Summary of Your Successes, instead Instead of: Objective: “Highly qualified marketing professional seeks employment with agency, in a challenging position with opportunity for growth” Say: “ Marketing Professional with ten years advertising and sales experience, resulting in increased productivity by 125% . Especially skilled at building effective and solid relationships with clients and staff. Seeking management position in the retail product industry that offers extensive contact with public.”
Brag about your accomplishments “ Marketing Professional with ten years advertising and sales experience, resulting in increased productivity by 125% . Especially skilled at building effective and solid relationships with clients and staff. Seeking management position in the retail product industry that offers extensive contact with public.”
More Summary Examples A Human Resource Professional with strengths in training and development, strategic program design, and business partnering. Experience and skills include: Recruiting Employee Relations Training Metrics & Analysis Social Media
More Summary Examples Administrative Assistant with four years experience managing business affairs for national law firm. Areas of expertise include client relations, accounting, and scheduling. Implemented accounting and collections system which streamlined client accounts and resulted in an increase of $10,000 annually for firm.
More Summary Examples Experienced restaurant manager, responsible for multi-unit franchise restaurant business. Five time “Best Customer Service in El Paso” recipient. Streamlined food and beverage ordering and inventory systems to achieve a 10% reduction in food cost. Successfully implemented “TeamWorks” employee incentive program, resulting in a 5% reduction in employee turnover.
Focus on Accomplishments, not “Duties”. Don’t say: Experienced in event planning Say: Successfully planned (including budget, marketing plan, vendor relations and logistics) statewide arts and crafts show, featuring more than 200 vendors and resulting in $25,000 in revenue for area nonprofit.
Focusing on Accomplishments Don’t say: “Responsible for webpage” Say: “Managed all aspects of website maintenance and online presence for public relations firm, including site design, customer relationship management, pay-per click marketing, and social media”
Focusing on Accomplishments Don’t say: “Managed Sales Team” Say: “Managed team of fourteen sales representatives within two counties. Increased sales by 25% in each county, within a 12 month period”
Consider putting Education at the end. It’s not necessarily WHAT you know, but WHAT YOU’VE done with that knowledge. By focusing on your accomplishments and successes, you let the prospective employer know you don’t just look good on paper, you can produce results.
Keep it Clean, Clear, and Concise Keep it clean. Don’t use hard to read fonts. Keep it simple. 1-2 sentences, 1-2 pages
Proofread! Proofread your resume yourself at least three times. Make sure that all of your information is correct, both in content and grammatically Have someone else review your resume for accuracy
See included examples of “Bad Resume” and “Good Resume”
Other things to consider Focus on employer’s needs, not yours Focus on your accomplishments & successes (be specific!) List most recent experience first Make good use of keywords
Keywords Use “industry specific” keywords that pertain to the career you are interested in Research job descriptions for careers in your selected field Use keywords listed in the job announcement
Examples of Keywords Leadership Strategic Cost saving Team building Oral and written communications Customer relations Customer service Producer Design Development Improvement Problem solving Decision making Revenue generating Streamlined Creative Results Oriented
What to Include/Omit from Your Resume Suggestions from Lisa Johnson Mandell in her book: Career Comeback, Repackage Yourself to Get the Job You Want Note: these are all suggestions. Use your discretion and the details of the specific job you are applying for when crafting your resume. These tips may not apply in all cases.
What to include in your resume Contact information, right at the top Summary of industry related skills and accomplishments Key words Professional experience or employment history List of skills related to your field Education (including degrees & honors, industry related coursework, workshops, etc.) Interests & activities/Professional memberships
What to Omit from your resume Birthdate The phrase “references available on request” Outdated skills or industry related terminology Your actual street address Anything that lengthens your resume to more than 2 pages Negative information Exaggerations or untruths Type smaller than 10 point
