Drawbacks
• Users need:
     • Web-enabled mobile device
     • 2D barcode reading app or QR
      code reader (http://www.mobile-
      barcodes.com/qr-code-software/)

• No standards for barcode readers

• Still relatively new in U.S.
Possibilities
“QR codes link the physical world with
the virtual by providing on-the-spot
access to descriptive language and
online resources for objects and
locations. In this way, the codes
support experiential learning,
bringing scholarship out of the
classroom and the computer and into
physical experience.”

Editor's Notes

  • #4: 2D barcodes that any camera-enabled mobile device can read (including iPad)(images from studies; referenced at end of PPT)Standard barcodes only store information horizontally. QR codes store information horizontally and vertically.  This allows for more complex commands to be built into the coding (ex: browse the internet, send emails, instant message, find directions)
  • #5: example: smart phone or flip phone reader depends on your device and network provider; check app store
  • #8: “SMS” = text message (short message service)“If you can read this, you’re a geek”
  • #9: Address book = good for business cards; networking
  • #16: QR = image fileInclude in PPT; on webpage/BB; on paper (handout; syllabus)Give students directions for using QR codes, since most people unfamiliar with them
  • #17: Why brief? smaller volume of info, easier to scanThe more information you store in your QR code, the more complex it will be. In other words, the geometric pattern will be denser, and therefore more difficult for phones to accurately scan and interpret. And not all the information may be stored if you try to include too much – bits may be left off. Put on business cards, syllabus, online class infoImportant campus offices: those office could create their own; or professor make for students
  • #21: Students:research information about campus siteswrite up what they have learnedgenerate QR code for contentpost codes at key destinationsActivity:Class tours each site and students present on infoIncorporate into campus tours
  • #22: Students:- research a topic present their findings on posterscreate and include QR codes, which link to online multimedia resources connected to the project topicDisplay posters in public area
  • #23: Create a series of QR codesattach them to physical objects (classroom or campus)Each code can supply a clue and a link to further informationstudents need to collect to complete the hunt.
