What are QR Codes

  • Definition: A QR code (abbreviated from Quick
Response code) is a type of matrix barcode
(or two-dimensional code) first designed for the
automotive industry. More recently, the system
has become popular outside of the industry due
to its fast readability and comparatively large
storage capacity. The code consists of black
modules arranged in a square pattern on a
    white background. The information encoded
can be made up of any kind of data (e.g.,
    binary, alphanumeric, or Kanji symbols).
What are QR Codes continued

  • Created by Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in
1994 to track vehicles during the manufacturing
process,[the QR code is one of the most
popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. It
was designed to allow its contents to be
    decoded at high speed.
  • The technology has seen frequent use in
Japan; the United Kingdom is the seventh-
largest national consumer of QR codes.

HOW TO USE THEM IN YOUR
        SCHOOL
Uses in the Classroom

   • Scavenger Hunts
   • On a field trip to a museum supplement info by
providing a worksheet with QR codes
   • QR code takes students to quiz @ end of trip
   • Provide parents with codes that they can scan
     to get homework/assignment info
   • Digital portfolios for students – adding copies of
papers, projects, tests and quizzes to the QR
code on a student’s report card gives parents a
broader picture of their child’s grade.
Classroom Uses Continued

  • Connecting with parents--on back-to-school
night or post QR codes in classroom linked to
information about the classroom curriculum or
    student displays.
  • Engaging students – with textbooks or study
    guides.
  • Easing the transition to college – virtual college
    tours.
  • Periodic Table of Elements – Code links to
    videos of each element
Classroom uses continued again..

   • Checking answers to a worksheets/classwork
   • Use an interactive whiteboard to record
     notes/math equations/brainstorming/etc. Host
the video online and add a QR code to a
homework assignment so students can be
     retaught from home
   - From QR codes in Classroom & 10 Ways to
     Use QR code in classroom
Examples of how we use them @ my
school
How we use them @ SOMS

  • I have made posters with QR codes on them
that link to all the teachers in the school that
have websites. People can then scan the codes
to get to the teachers websites.
  • Great for back to school night and teacher
    conferences
  • Teachers using them in classroom
Uses in Special Education Classroom

   • As an alternative to writing down long URLs,
phone numbers or address for students with
     motor skills issues
   • To create a visual phone or address book for
     quick access
   • To supplement or summarize class material
   • To create flash cards
   • To provide audio information or directions
   - From QR codes as Assistive Technology
Using them in College Classroom

   • Vcard – adding contact info & other important
info so students can easily contact you
   • Office Availability
   • Links to supplemental materials in textbook
   • Classroom Calendar
   • List Sources from your presentation
   • Post assignments for the week
   • Links to audio copies of lectures
