CRITICAL
EVALUATION 4
When starting off my research for this project I used sites such as Youtube, Short of
the Week and Vice to watch short films to inspire me and look for things I could use in
my work. These websites had a wide variety of products for me to watch, all for free…
In my further research I used sites like slideshare to look a presentations on
conventions of psychological thrillers and horror movies to make sure my
short film ‘Normal’ followed these specific conventions.
When I had the idea of what I wanted to do I used the online open sourced
software Celtex to write my script. It formats it in the style of professional
feature film script and allows me to re create my own for free.
iPhone: In this project, I
cannot count how many times I had to
use my phone as a piece of technology.
Its use was endless and it helped me
through every step of the way.
For example, I used it to organise my
actors when shooting. It allowed me to
send them any files or necessary items,
whilst being able to contact them to see
where they were if they were not on
location. When test shooting the iPhone
was amazing. It allowed me to still take
high resolution images without having to
carry around a heavy piece of equipment,
I could then airdrop the files onto my
computer to then upload onto Blogger, an
online open sourced software.
(Blogger also has an app, which I could
use on the go using my iPhone. This
allowed me to be flexible but also
organised as I could note things down in
my blog or make posts on the go!)
I upload my drafts to the website blogger to show evidence of research and
planning When looking at film posters I used google images to find relating film
posters. I also used google to find websites of films that have similar content to
mine. The internet has been a very important and useful tool in the research,
planning and production of my film.
When I shot my film I used a Canon 5d camera to shoot my film. It is a DSLR camera
and allowed me to shoot high resolution footage without having to spend thousands and
thousands of pounds on a proper RED camera.
It is practical and easy to use and once I began experimenting it became more clear.
When I had to shoot a night shoot in Primrose Hill, I used a Neewer LED Light to allow
for my footage to be clean and clear without disconnecting the audience from the piece.
I then uploaded my footage to the software Premiere Pro, by
plugging in the SD card with all my footage on, into a Mac.
On Premiere Pro I cut and edited all of my footage together. I
added the beginning titles and end credits using this software. I
also used it to colour grade my images, and add a vignette on
some of my shots.
There were times when editing my film, where I realised I needed to add
foley effects/sfx . This was due to the fact I didn't use a sound recorder when
filming my project therefore there were a lot of sounds that I needed to
implant myself. I used websites such as FreeSound.Org and YT to MP3 to
find and discover those sounds. I could then download them onto my iTunes
to then be imported into Premiere pro. This is an amazing example of how I
integrated the technologies.
MAGAZINE & WEBSITE:
When using my website I used Photoshop, InDesign and
Online platforms, to find the resources I needed. Originally,
when I shot the photos for my poster, I used a Canon 5D
CAMERA
I found PNG images on
google of laurel leaves, a
15 certificate and
production company logos
like Miramax and Film4,
giving my poster a more
professional look.
I then input my SD CARD into
the computer to upload my
photo’s onto PhotoShop. Here I
colour graded and manipulated
the image, to remove the
background from the subject
whilst retouching any
blemishes or marks on the
photo or subject.
Intergrated
technologies
I then uploaded that image to
Indesign where I created my
poster using the tools available
on the software
I download fonts for free, that
I found online on the website
DaFont.com
I also found a credit
block template online
which I downloaded and
used in my poster again
making it look like a
genuine professional
poster
WEBSITE:
For my website I used a free
online software called Wix. This
enabled me to create a
professional website for free. I
intergrated technologies by
uploading images from computer
which I had taken with my canon
5d CAMERA.
