Cropping pattern
• Cropping pattern refers to the proportion of land under cultivation
of different crops at different pont of time .This indicates the
time and arrangement of crops in a particular
land area.
Types of cropping pattern
Inetr topping
Mixed cropping
Crop rotation
Crop rotation
• Repeated cultivation of crops or crops and fallow in a certain
sequence on the same land is called crop rotation .
• It is the reverse of land rotation .
• Here crop is rotated year after year.
Intercropping
• Intercropping is a multiple cropping practice that involves growing
two or more crops in proximity .In other words , intercropping is
the cultivation of two or more crops simultaneously on the same
field .The most common goal of intercropping is to produce a
greater yield on a given piece of land by making use of resources
or ecological process that would otherwise not be utilized by
single crop.
Mixed cropping
• Growing two or more crops simultaneously and intermingled on
the same piece of land without row arrangement are called mixed
cropping.
• This reduces risk and gives some insurance against failure of one
of the crops.
Cropping System
• The cropping patterns used on a farm and their interaction with
farm resources ,other farm enterprises and available technology
which determine their make up.
• The yearly sequence and spatial arrangement of crops and fallow
on a given area.
Objective
• Efficient utilization of all resources viz.Land ,water and solar
radiation maintaining stability in production and obtaining higher
net return .
• The efficiency is measured by the quantity of produce obtained
per unit resources in a unit time .
• Benefits of cropping system
• Maintain and enhance soil fertility
• Enhance crop growth
• Control weeds
Classification of cropping system
• Depending on the resources and technology available different
types of cropping System are adopted on farms
Monoculture
Intensive cropping
Sequential cropping
Crop rotation
• Intensive cropping – Growing number of crops on the same piece
of land during the given period of time and this is type of
agriculture both of crop plants and of animals with higher level of
input or output per unit of agriculture land area.
• Sequential cropping – sequential cropping involves growing two
crops in the same field ,one after the other in the same year .
• Crop rotation – crop rotation is the practice of planting different
crops sequentially on the same plot of land to improve soil health
,optimize nutrients in the soil ,and combat pest and weed
pressure .
