A massive wildfire occurred in Crowsnest, Canada in August 2003, measuring 6 km in length with flames rising 50 m high and releasing as much energy as an atomic bomb every 30 minutes. Over 20,000 hectares of forest were destroyed by the intense flames, though the timber and tourism industries suffered impacts while other local businesses were not affected. Salvaging burnt lumber required removing bark to produce clean wood chips and create new ecological diversity in the regrown forest areas.
