The Lost Creek Fire began as a random fire that grew out of control in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta on August 21, 2003. It burned over 20,000 hectares of forest as a massive 6-km wall of flames reached 50 meters into the sky. While the fire negatively impacted tourism, it benefited some local businesses and created ecological diversity in the burned areas that will support new undergrowth. One local resident described evacuating quickly and then watching in horror as the large flames approached the town, feeling drawn to view the destruction.
