On August 21, 2003, a seasonal wildfire in Canada abruptly changed direction and grew into a massive blaze. The 6-km wide wall of flames reached 50 meters into the sky, releasing the energy equivalent of an atomic bomb every 30 minutes. Local resident Elaine Hruby was evacuated from her home by authorities as the fire raced towards her property. Over 20,000 hectares of forest were burned, negatively impacting tourism but providing burnt lumber that was harvested and processed by local sawmills.
