A wildfire in Crowsnest, Alberta grew rapidly in August 2003, throwing off energy equivalent to atomic explosions. Elaine Hruby evacuated her home alone, struggling over what to take and feeling anxious about leaving as the flames drew her attention. The fires burned over 20,000 hectares of forest, negatively impacting the timber and tourism industries while restaurants, gas stations and office services were unaffected. Spray Lake Sawmills benefited as the fires allow for new plant diversity and undergrowth.
