Educational Waves of Change
CSR2VET project
Beaches, once pristine and serene,
now face an escalating problem
as they bear the brunt of pollution
and litter. Plastic waste, debris, and
discarded items have marred the
beauty of these natural landscapes,
posing a significant threat to marine
life and ecosystems.
In response to this growing concern,
students from Şile Ayet Azer Aran
Defence Industry Vocational and
Technical Anatolian High School were
involved in beach cleaning initiatives
on 13th
October 2023. This activity
aimed to address the issue of beach
pollution, while increasing students’
environmental and social awareness.
Small efforts lead
to big differences
Objectives
2
• Create awareness sensitizing students to the effects of
pollution.
• Increase students’ citizenship competence.
• Increase students’ knowledge on the topic.
• Foster teamwork, responsibility, and a sense of community
involvement.
Resources • Personal protective equipment including reusable work/garden
gloves, trash bags etc.
Tipology
and duration
Learning outcome
Typology
Environmental issue was conducted by engaging students in
hands-on experiences and reflection through experimental
learning.
Duration
The activity takes about 60 minutes.
However, a whole day is preferred when pre-during-post activities
are included.
The activity can be done in many different contexts: parks,
riverbanks, woods, etc.
1. Awareness of Global Issues: the activity is a gateway to discussing broader global issues
related to pollution, waste management, and environmental sustainability.
2. Environmental Awareness: students develop a deeper understanding of the impact of
pollution on natural ecosystems, specifically coastal environments. They become more aware
of the need for environmental conservation and the consequences of neglecting it.
3. Data collection and analysis: the beach cleaning activity involves data collection on the
types and quantities of waste collected. This provides an opportunity to introduce basic data
analysis and reporting skills.
4. Teamwork: the activity promotes teamwork and cooperation as students work together
to clean the beach efficiently. They learn to communicate, coordinate, and share tasks
effectively.
5. Responsible Citizenship: the activity instills a sense of responsibility and good citizenship
in students. They recognize their role in maintaining the cleanliness and health of their
community’s natural resources.

1. Pre-Activity Session - Conduct a classroom session on enviromental issues, emphasizing the
importance of the role each of us can play in protecting the enviroment and also exploring the
connection between the activity and the UN SDG.
2. Selecting a Site - Identify a suitable site within or near the school premises.
3. Beach cleaning Day - On the designated day, students and teachers gather at the site. Divide
them in small groups, and start the collection.
4. Analysing the type of material collected - Invite students to make a list of the most frequent
rubbish type. The list could be used during the follow-up session.
5. Follow-Up Session Conduct a post-activity session to evaluate the activity and reflect on the
reasons on waste abandonment.
Tools to evaluate the activity
1. Observation and Participation - Assess students’ active participation during the beach
cleaning day, including their ability to follow guidelines and work collaboratively.
2. Quiz or Assessment - Administer a quiz or written assessment to evaluate students’
understanding of ecological concepts related to sea pollution.
3. Presentation or Report - Have students create presentations or reports on the activity,
emphasizing what they’ve learned, their contributions, and their experiences.
4. Peer and Self-Evaluation - Encourage students to assess their own participation and that of
their peers, promoting self-reflection and teamwork.
5. Make a SWOT Analysis - Involve your students in making a SWOT analysis detecting
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the activity as a whole. In the following
pages we present the SWOT Analysis conducted by Şile Ayet Azer Aran Defence Industry
Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.
6. Interview - Involve students asking them to respond to a questionnaire on the Activity. In
the following pages we present the questionnaire conducted by Şile Ayet Azer Aran Defence
Industry Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. The students were asked to respond
to the questionnaire to evaluate the activity and to express their feeling about the school CSR
policy.
