This document summarizes a study on the tradeoffs between high quality agricultural land and urban development in Auckland, New Zealand. It finds that 28% of Auckland's land is considered high class for agriculture. However, urban expansion has already led to the loss of over 7,000 hectares (5.7%) of this high class land. If future population growth projections materialize, requiring 400,000 new dwellings by 2040, even more high quality agricultural land will likely be lost to development. The study stresses the importance of protecting this valuable natural resource and the ecosystem services it provides.
