     Making Timelines
Entrance Procedure
• Read the Essential Question: How can making
  or reading a timeline help me organize and
  study history?

• Do Now: Name three Roman Legacies and tell
  me why they are important
Essential Question and Big Goal
• Essential Question: How can making or
  reading a timeline help me organize and study
  history?

• Big Goal Connection: Reading and creating
  timelines is an important skills that you will
  need in the rest of middle school and into high
  school and BEYOND!!
Activator!
• We are going to watch a short digital
  animation clip from Pixar
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omk6TAxJ
  YOg
• While we watch, you need to be taking notes
  about the plot of the video

• Think Pair Share: Summarize the plot of the
  film into 5 events
Class Share Out!
• Students will come up to the board and will
  put their events in order on the Class Timeline
  for the story
Rules of Timelines
• #1 You always draw timelines with an arrow in the front and
  an arrow in the back
• #2 AD or CE, BC or BCE
   – AD (Anno Domini or Year of our Lord referring to the year of
     Christ’s birth).
   – The meaning of BC is Before Christ.
   – CE is a recent term. It refers to Common Era and is used in place
     of A.D.
   – BCE means Before Common Era.
• #3 Long-ago left, Recent right
• #4 Century Rule: 4th century = 300’s 21st century= 2000’s
• #5 BC/BCE—the smaller the number the more recent it is
AD/CE—the bigger the number the more recent it is
Class Timeline!
• In your group work to put the dates in order
  using your notes sheet.

• Then, I will call up people to the board to put
  the dates in order.

• We will record the dates on the first line of our
  timeline.
Practice!!
• 1. Write the following dates in order on your
  timeline.
• 123 BC
• 789 AD
• 678 BC
• 1790 AD
• 23 BC
• 243 AD
• 2003 BC
• 2. Use the Century Rule above to help you and
  write the correct century for each date.
Practice Making a Timeline Online
• Make a time line of your own life!
• Make sure you included
  – Birthdate
  – Each year that you had a birthday
  – Years you started school
  – Significant events that have happened
Table Summarizer
• Teacher will assign each group one of the 5
  rules of timelines.

• Students must summarize the rule in their
  own words and be able to explain it to the
  class in under one minute!
Review
• Reviewing Greece and Rome! You will work
  with your table partner!
• Those that do not have table partners will be
  paired up with the person of my choosing
1. Work on your Review of Greece and Rome
2. Grab a Green Textbook and begin working on
   your map (back page)
