Unison – Drivers for Power Quality Monitoring
Key drivers and rationale
 Validate compliance with network standards
(EN50160)
 Better understand the root causes of power
quality issues
 Review and update network standards
 Review business processes
 Better understand the level of power quality
supply to their customers
 Regulatory incentives
21
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
Unison – Current status
 Unison opted to deploy Landis+Gyr’s cost-
effective LV monitoring solution (a variant of
S760) with advanced power quality monitoring
and remote firmware/configuration as a part of
their Smart Grid Program.
 Since Q4 2014, a total of 150 units have been
rolled out and installed in distribution
transformers for online power quality
monitoring in the second half of 2014.
 This will inform the assessment of emerging
quality of supply issues, and impact from
disruptive technologies such as renewable
generation connection. Unison will be able to
manage quality of supply for their customers
more effectively through this innovative
approach.

Retrofit Distribution Automation
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
Enexis – Drivers for Distribution Automation
Key drivers and rationale
 Improve the quality of power distribution to
reduce frequency and duration of power
outages and radically decrease utility’s SAIDI
figures
 To deploy a retrofit solution in existing and new
substations.
 The automation solution had to fit 20% of the
substation variations which covered 80% of
utility’s network installations.
 To reduce installation costs by deploying a
standardized distribution automation solution,
both during the installation phase but more
importantly, during the replacement phase if
need be.
24
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
Enexis – customer experience
 Over 700 units rolled out
 Very little interaction with installers was
required in the field as everything could be
pre-configured. Installation did not require a
laptop.
 Significant outage reduction has been
achieved. Customer Minutes Lost (CML)
reduced from 87+ minutes to 3–5 minutes,
reaching almost 60% (instead of expected
40%).
 Grids are more meshed than originally
expected.
 Based on this experience the utility is able to
update its Distribution Automation strategy.
25
 Low Total Cost of Ownership of the solution
 Remote upgradability for SCADA protocols
 Remote firmware capabilities to roll out security
updates based on external security revision
 Solution flexibility and modularity proved
important as the need for increasing feeder
control was revealed during the rollout phase
 Simple and intuitive user interface

MV/LV Monitoring & Control
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
DONG energy - Drivers
Key drivers and rationale
 DONG energy was one of the first utilities to
start implementation of the smart grid plan back
in 2000. Their goal was to create a MV/LV
Monitoring and Control Solution for their
distribution network.
 Primary goal was to deploy a modular retrofit
solution to fit DONG energy’s large variety of
substations, some being 100 years old and
others being brand new.
 Second objective was to locate faults faster
(earth faults and short circuit) to be able to
reduce SAIDI, which required automation
capabilities.
27
© Landis+Gyr | 19 March 2015
DONG energy – customer experience
 Over 300 units rolled out (5% of substations
covered with automation and 3rd Generation fault
detectors)
 Significant outage reduction has been achieved.
Customer Minutes Lost (CML) reduced from 35+
minutes to approximately 7 minutes.
 The system has been in operation for more than 10
years and is now used beyond fault detection, e.g.
for network planning.

Fault management statistics (1 year)
 Customer Minutes Lost (CML): 12.000k
 Saved due to MV/LV monitoring and control:
550k
 Saved 5% CML that are directly related to
MV/LV monitoring and control
Actual fault management example
 Fault in the network occurred in November
2014
 Majority of customers went back online within
1 minute due to MV/LV monitoring and
control!
