Design Brief Designing a couch using principles of postmodernism and modularity for students who use Den Lambda. Objectives:To understand post modernist theory and how it works in the context of Furniture Design as well as space management.
Need Statement To Design a Post Modern Couch for Students by using elements of a traditional ‘khatiya’ which will be used for discussion and resting.
Inspiration Play of Sunlight in Voids
Weaving Patterns
Ornamental yet functional legs
Specific colors of structural elements
Recurrence of elements within a piece
Tactful use of dissimilar elements
Harmony through sensitive balance
A symmetry in various asymmetriesUser Study - Behavior of the students utilizing Den Lambda was observed to come up with specifications and constraints for the project. - The students hold discussions quite often. - The furniture are moved around a lot.- Some students work overnight and rest occasionally for short periods.- While working students prefer to take notes of discussions. Laptops are also often used.

  • 24. Concept FinalizationThe design that sufficed most of the specifications and constraints was finalized. The design also facilitated modularity with pronounced postmodern appealBy adopting angular geometries, the design became more flexible. This also endorsed Postmodern values to the furniture significantly. This also allowed a more efficient space management compared to other forms. The inspirational details of Khatiya were satisfactorily integrated in the final design.
  • 25. Concept RefinementMaterial for seating has been revised. Earlier Plastic threads were to be used. However, to make the seats more comfortable, elastic ropes have been proposed. The corner in the larger seating, i.e. seating no. 4 has been rearranged.Color palettes for enhancing the Post modernist appearance of the furniture have been selected. Color coding has been provided to make sure that the modular units of the furniture are placed back correctly without confusion.
