PROBLEM:
Companies attempting to hire recent graduates
(without work experience) would like the
applicants to be more qualified (i.e. prepared for
the duties of the position, solid basic skills and
capabilities) to do the job they are applying for.
Brainstormed Ideas to Better Prepare
Applicants While They are Students:
1. Add more business courses to classes
2. Interview companies to find out what they
need
3. Ask employers to speak about needs to class
4. Have employers teach classes
5. Invest in better books
6. Include industry magazines in curriculum
7. Help students identify personal talents
8. Help students identify personal strengths
9. Have students work as interns at various
companies
10. Take you kid to work day
11. Add more business related research projects
12. Have students start mock businesses
13. Employers provide needs criteria to schools
14. Create schools run by the business
15. Hire consultants to evaluate teachers
16. Have consultants evaluate curriculum
17. Include more creative thinking courses in
curriculum
18. Create specialized job training courses
19. Involve school counselors in preparing
students
20. Find mentors for students
21. Include more business classes in secondary
school
22. Include more vocational arts in schools
23. Involve parents more actively
24. Create additional business related courses
25. Have parents teach their children about
business
26. Integrate Junior Achievement into early
education systems
27. Have students develop a business (or business
plan)
28. Create a study about career beliefs of studies
29. Lower the expectations of hiring companies
30. Extend the amount of requirements necessary
to graduate
31. Make “work study” classes a requirement for
graduation
32. Improve the knowledge of teachers
33. Make teachers work in various other industries
34. Hire more teachers that have worked in areas
other than academia
35. Change the educational system to be less
standardized
36. Make HR departments recruit only from
specific schools
37. Include more elaborate case studies within
study material
38. Create more school/business partnerships
39. Promote adolescents obtaining part time jobs
40. Include more life skills in curriculums
41. Promote entrepreneurship at an early age
42. Promote the armed services as a viable
employer
43. Incorporate classes on performing research
44. Increase the expectations made by parents
and educators
45. Capitalize on leveraging what motivates the
students

perception of what is entailed in working
47. Lessen the dependence of technology in
education
