for Community
College
Our local Community College has an excellent Nursing program, however, there is a long waiting
list with, at this time, no plans for expansion. An idea to consider is to establish a Healthcare
Academy of Excellence, by partnering with the local medical community, hospitals and the
Community College to purchase a vacant 488,000 sf building. This would allow all healthcare sector
training to take place under one roof. Programs could be expanded to include LVN, CN, LPN, and
RN to MSN. Additional programs might include Medical Assistant, Dialysis Technician, Respiratory
Therapist, X-Ray Tech, and Phlebotomist. Consideration could be given to adding Dental Training –
Dental Assistant and Hygienist. The vacant building has a “showroom” that could be converted to a
Non-Profit Urgent Care facility that would be staffed, in part, by students. Such an academy would
provide training, updated skills and the experience that is lacking in the workforce.
Regional collaborative group could be formed to purchase a business to use for
Community College training and more. One idea would be to buy and operate a small
hotel and ancillary tourist-related business to train hospitality, culinary and business
students. The small, 15-room hotel could be operated by students taking hospitality
courses. Business students could operate the gift shop, students enrolled in the culinary
program could operate the restaurant. Perhaps the gas station, which might have a car
repair component could be run by students as well. This would provide work experience
and actual hands-on projects for a diversity of students in many different educational
tracks.
Rather than individual “Career Days” at Junior and Senior High Schools, bring the students
to a regional, day-long Career Day at the local County Fairgrounds. Give it a “trade show”
feel with exhibits of local businesses and their representatives. Have “breakout sessions”
screening Stanford Entrepreneurial lectures and TED.com podcasts. Offer free tools &
seminars for resume writing, and free workshops for mock interviews. There could be the
morning sessions offered to grades 7-9, and afternoon sessions for grades 10-12. The
common time for both would be a luncheon and keynote speakers. Have some fun with a
skit illustrating the Dos and Don’ts of interviewing, which could also be presented at
schools.
