- 2. Context • Public Sector Cloud Adoption Report • Eduserv & Socitm – Sept 2018 • Based on the 633 responses received from UK local councils, HE institutions, public bodies and emergency services

What it says • Universities and public bodies, which are mainly driven by scalability and agility, are the first and second heaviest cloud adopters in the public sector – 36% and 29% of cloud usage, respectively • Local government currently sits second to last in the ranking, with only 21% on the cloud adoption rate, with legacy IT being one of its main challenges

What it says • The use of on-premise and third-party datacentres, the costs that come with maintaining them and the need to upskill the staff, are some of the many reasons why cloud adoption is not being implemented faster in the public sector • Other challenges are organisational culture, resistance to change and budgetary challenges • As you might expect, hybrid adoption strategies are the preferred approach

However… • It’s not clear whether everyone means the same thing by ‘cloud’ • It’s not clear why some sectors might be inherently more prone to successful cloud adoption than others • It’s not clear what adoption strategies work well, and why • …or if strategies that work well in one sector will also work well in others • So more work potentially required…

- 9. What are your compelling events? • Data centre closure? • Hardware end of life? • Support end of life? • Other?
- 10. Understand your estate • Applications, applications, applications • Work with your software vendors • Don’t get bogged down in the details of your infrastructure too early • At some stage you will need that detail • But don’t let the infrastructure tail wag the application dog
